Yes, Resident Evil 5 has a 5GB install

While this is distressing news for those with smaller PS3 hard drives, we'd like to point out that the installation time is nowhere near as lengthy as the one found in Capcom's previous MT Framework game, Devil May Cry 4 (in other words, you won't have time to make a Jill sandwich while you wait). The installation makes the load times in Resident Evil 5 incredibly brief, to the point where most players will have trouble reading the text that appears during the load screen.
If you're running out of space on your hard drive, it might be time to delete Game Data off your system. Think about the games you may not play any more, such as DMC4, Fallout 3, or MGS4. If you know you're not going to play a certain game for a while, you can probably afford to delete it off your system. Stay tuned for our impressions of the full game.

Or, you can upgrade your PS3 HDD, it's easy enough.
kentuckyfried @ Feb 2nd 2009 3:20PM
500 GB SATA is also $104 at Fry's this week (Newegg and elsewhere also have it around that price).
No excuses not to swap that puppy out...
Albanian_Killa @ Feb 2nd 2009 5:11PM
I went from a 20GB to a 120GB, and I ain't looking back. I love it. All my media is on my PS3. All my songs, all my videos. Many photos also. Still got 61GB left. Whoever needs extra space for their PS3 should upgrade ASAP cause you feel so much more free. No more worrying about if that demo will cause you to delete another demo to play it.
Rick Shurts @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:09PM
Or transfer some stuff onto a external device.
Vohaul79 @ Feb 2nd 2009 7:58PM
Or forget upgrading the hard drive at all and stream your entire music , videos, and pictures from your computer and get over it. That way you have way more space than necc. I have my 60gb launch and since havn't even come close to filling up my HDD. If you get desperate just delete some old game data for the love of...
By the way, if you use a Mac, use the program "MediaLink" by Nullriver software. Its cheap and works perfectly. You'll find the PS3's inclusion of DLNA is handy in more way than one.

I am glad I have a 320 GB......

Does it come with a sandwich this time around? or at least a cooking manual?
Garry @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:27PM
I haven't played a Resident Evil game since 3: Nemesis, just tried the demo of 5. I didn't like it. It felt like Dark Sector but you're not allowed to walk while you aim.:(
Levi @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:03PM
Yeah, it really is split between old RE's and new RE's at this point. Very different games. I had more fun with the old ones, and especially thought the stories of the old ones were better, but RE4 was still a really good game on its own.
vahdyx @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:37PM
Sucks ass! So I'll be getting it on Xbox then.
The 30 mins of playing I can do right away is better than the 30 min install I have to endure
Tez @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:13PM
30 minute install? Are you an idiot in real life or do you just play one on the internet?
vahdyx @ Feb 2nd 2009 3:09PM
@ TAZ
Sorry, 20-25 min install?!?!?!?!
Devil May Cry and Lost Planet were my references to the time to install a similar sized install.
Bitch

Buuahahahahaha...

Hyams @ Feb 2nd 2009 4:58PM
The install apparently doesn't take long. Taken from above:
"While this is distressing news for those with smaller PS3 hard drives, we'd like to point out that the installation time is nowhere near as lengthy as the one found in Capcom's previous MT Framework game, Devil May Cry 4 (in other words, you won't have time to make a Jill sandwich while you wait). The installation makes the load times in Resident Evil 5 incredibly brief, to the point where most players will have trouble reading the text that appears during the load screen."
It also seems likely that after the (short) install, PS3 load times will be slightly shorter than 360 load times. This is of course negated if you then choose to install the game on the 360 (which would probably be a 6-7GB install, and take slightly longer than the PS3 install).
Really, one version isn't a whole lot better than the other. Just get it for your favourite console, I guess, or the console most of your friends have (for the online co-op).
drdre74 @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:40PM
Why are devs being so damn lazy? How come Uncharted can make a game that is maxing out the PS3 and not have a install and Capcom can't? Thye need to put in the work to make their games run without a install unless you want to.
ryan @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:08PM
That's the #1 question really.
Capcom, your rebuttal?
Game_playa @ Feb 2nd 2009 4:22PM
Sloppy coding.
philmcphail @ Feb 2nd 2009 6:46PM
LOL its not just Naughty Dog, even EA games was able to do it with Dead Space too! You pop in the disc and go straight to the game, no installation to take up your hard drive.
microshocky @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:42PM
Don't these devs care about the people with the 20GB and 40GB drives??
Not everyone upgraded their harddrive like us, i have a 250gb in mine so i'd never have to worry about game installs.
And why are these installs so big? 5GB? 2GB is acceptable but 5..is crossing the line
Angel Mass @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:50PM
Think about it, someone with a 20GB or 40GB disk, probably doesnt have a PC with enough RAM , a graphic card or a good Processor for a game like this either
Copland @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:52PM
Well if you shocked about 5GB, I wonder how you'll feel when FFXIII has a mandatory install :p I can guess is will be huuuuge!
Ilya @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:16PM
That's ridiculous Angel Mass. As someone mentioned above, uncharted ran beautifully and that was all without a dumb install.
I don't mind installs but these are HUGE installs. 5GB is huge for something not even on the PC
Harddrive space also doesnt determine how powerful your ps3 is.
jimi hendrix @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:41PM
I'm definitely not a fan boy and I do agree that having bigger Hard Drive space does NOT make your PS3 more powerful but is MORE COST EFFICIENT than what the Xbox360 has to offer. Plus I upgraded my PS3's 80gb hdd for a 320gb easy installation. Its on sale at Best Buy for $80!! or you can just get a 500 gig external for $85!
Its funny cos I hear that upgrading the 360's arcade edition by installing a hard drive will run you over $100... for a 60 gig, pathetic!
tboy123 @ Feb 2nd 2009 7:24PM
@Angel Mass
I have a 20GB hdd in my LAUNCH PS3... I have not upgraded it. I cannot upgrade it. Why? I lost my job. Can't find another one.
BTW, my computer has 4GB RAM, 2x 8800GTS (SLI)... Intel Core 2 Quad...
Also, I have 8GB open still.
Which I also bought when I thought my job was secure.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
I would not buy this game anyway. Looks like $hit. I am saving my $100 Wal-mart gift card for KZ2!
adolson @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:43PM
I upgraded to an 80GB drive from 40GB, and I find it mostly sufficient, but it's still a bit annoying that these installs aren't optional. I could deal with lengthier load times if it were between that and sitting through long-ass installs. Considering that it's installing over half the maximum size of a 360 game, I find this a bit ridiculous.
Won't stop me from dealing with the situation if I like the demo, though. An install for a great game doesn't make it any less great.
hplcman @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:48PM
I just upgraded my 60 GB to a 500 GB HDD in my PS3 and was surprised at how easy it was. Definitely worth it if you have the means. That being said I'll still delete game data off the HDD if I've put a game aside for a while. You just have to remember to give yourself that 15 minutes to re0install if you want to play it again...
Copland @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:48PM
People own a PS3 should definitely upgrade their HDD.
Its one of PS3's big advantages comparing to the XBox360.
With PS3, you can use HDD's from Seagate, Hitachi, WD and they're really cheap these days, compared to the 120GB HDD which M$ offers for the 360.
Angel Mass @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:48PM
I think that a 5GB game doesnt bothers anyone really
tboy123 @ Feb 2nd 2009 7:31PM
I have a 20GB hdd in my LAUNCH PS3... I have not upgraded it. I cannot upgrade it. Why? I lost my job. Can't find another one.
BTW, my computer (built it myself) has 4GB RAM, 2x 8800GTS (SLI), Intel Core 2 Quad.
I bought parts off Newegg when I though my job was secure.
Also, I have 6-8GB open on my ps3 still... Havn't checked in a while.
I would not buy this game anyway. Looks like $hit. I am saving my $90 Wal-mart gift card for KZ2! Then trading the remainder of it for $20 so I can buy Fat Princess when it comes out.
SNEECHES @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:02PM
I have a 500 gig hdd so this doesn't bother me in the least :) glad to see it speeds up the load times by quite a bit.
Can't wait to get off work and try the demo, if its anything like RE 4 then I'll prolly hate it.
PhoenixP3K @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:05PM
Never played a Resident Evil game before. I'll try my hand at the demo.
Levi @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:08PM
Yikes... I have a 40gb with like 1gb left :( don't really feel like upgrading, guess it's time to delete some of the many PSN games I own and don't play anymore.
Devin @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:45PM
unless you have downloaded Siren or Burnout Paradise over PSN, PSN titles should not add up to 39GB. I would delete any old game data files (not the save files) of games you don't own anymore or won't play for a while. Since I don't emulate games anymore I will (sooner or later) delete my 10GB allotted Linux partition to free up some space (if need be).
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Feb 2nd 2009 4:17PM
Devin you only star off with like 34GBs, and after the 20 or so games with Installs it doesnt take long to fill stuff up dude
aj @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:12PM
Remember when you could put a game in a console and play it?
Tez @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:17PM
Yes. And the games and systems were infinitely less complex. Get over it.
ElStefio @ Feb 2nd 2009 8:08PM
I completely fail to understand why advancements in technology should make life anything other than easier...
Popfrogs @ Feb 2nd 2009 11:10PM
Yeah and thanks to Capcom, we still pine for those days.
Naughty Dog and Guerrilla, however, help us remember those days as being just a disc-change away.
poochi @ Feb 2nd 2009 2:14PM
i have a 40 gb ps3 and i have 12 left over...should i changed my 80 gb laptop harddrive to the ps3 and the 40 on the laptop?
