Killzone 2 is GameFly's most wanted title

Now, there's one last inkling left on our minds. Seeing as Killzone 2 is the most sought after rental, we wonder if that implies anything about interest in buying the game? It'll be interesting to see what goes down when the game releases worldwide later this month.

That's what I was thinking as well, but at least there'll be more people online than if they didn't buy the game at all and it might convince them to spend their cash

I'm not suprised there are so many in the queue for Killzone 2 rentals.
For me the demo wasn't incredible like the reviews say, maybe it was too short - I don't know - but it didn't seem to click with me. Maybe the people in that queue feel the same but believe the game has more to offer because of the high review scores, so will try it out.

Sometimes it's really difficult to get across what a game will be in its entirety. This is the case for the Killzone 2 demo. It's short and the first part of it didn't have much action.
This is similar to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The demo didn't impress me in the least. There wasn't much content. However, when I bought the game it turned out to be one of the best games this generation, especially for earlier PS3 owners.
Having been in the Beta, I at least know the Multiplayer is worth the money (even with the few bugs and rocket-spraying). Do yourself a favor and at least rent it.

It's funny that, because I really loved the Uncharted demo and played it many times...
Yet as you were in the beta I trust your word. So I might just buy this anyway, for the trophies if nothnig else, but I hope that isn't the case.

Yeah, let me pull out my wad of cash and run out and buy it... Please... Paying for the 2 games at a time plan at gamefly comes to about the same amount of money as buying 4 $60 games. So as long as I play more than 4 games a year, I'm coming out ahead.

as soon as i read the headline i had a feeling something like that last paragraph was going to come up. at the end of the year the top rented list came out "where are all the ps3 games?", a ps3 game is at the top of the list for wanted rented games "is anyone going to buy it?"

Heck, Killzone 2 should be the MOST WANTED title on Gamefly. There were over 1 million preoders in Europe and considering the state if the Nation; more people will rent games instead of buying.

we already know that the game rulz and thats worth the money...
i dont have the money yet.. but even if a have to wait a few more weeks.. i wont spend money renting it to play it sooner.. id rather wait and have my own copy

Well after they wait 5 months for gamefly to actually send the game, they'll end up buying it. That's why I ditched my gf account, i got tired of getting 5-9 on my list.

you can buy games from gamefly. its like 20% off the retail price and you get the game a day or so later. unless i want it now i always get my games from gamefly since its cheaper.

I never rent games, but I'm renting this one before buying it.
Why?
A) I'm tired of plopping down $60 for a game I'll stop playing after a week, and
B) I remember the first Killzone.

Yeah, getting KZ2 from GF doesn't really make sense. I'm guessing most folks who've queued this up will be waiting a month just to play it. On the other hand, I feel like a lot of other people here do about the demo-- it didn't blow me away as reviews suggested it would. (Then again, more than a few reviews noted that the game started out "meh" and built to a climax somewhere in the middle-- maybe it's just a hard game to compress into a ten-minute test drive.)
I'm torn because I want to play through the campaign to see what all the fuss is about, but I've never been one to spend hours on MP, so $60 seems like a steep price for a ten hour ride. Dunno. Maybe I'll buy it, beat it, and put it on eBay for $40...?
* About the demo: I will say that playing through it a few times is a must, as the gameplay becomes more rewarding as you come to grips with the controls. I definitely get what reviewers are saying about how refined and visceral the combat is. It doesn't feel like a shooting gallery in the COD4 sense, where things are fast and weightless and you mow down enemies. But at the same time, it is another shooter and I think I'm just tired of the gritty war game genre.

I am starting to feel the same way...I am not willing to spend as much time on MP anymore...after going gold cross on COD4 and getting the platinum trophy for R2, I want to get back to alot of the RPGs that I still have for my PS2 that I didn't get to finish. But I would buy your "mint" condition KZ2 for $40 in a flash. KZ2, SF4 and RE5 are the only games I plan on buying for the next 6 months. Even though a 360 is looking mighty temping with the release of Star Ocean coming this month.......damn you tri-ace!!

I will buy this game period. i dont trust gamefly anymore because it has alway very low games for over 5 months! why did they rent KZ2? they should be idiot who can't afford it or just want to play it for a short time and see if they like it then they will buy KZ2 is a big waste of time.
I BET most of them can't get KZ2 from gamefly because it will be alway very low game so fast and have to wait for over 5 months.
Anyways im looking forward to play this awesome full game on 27th! Go for it, KZ2!

I don't get it either. Why would you rent this? The multiplayer is what really shines even though the single player campaign is supposed to be decent.
So you rent a multiplayer game, play it for a week or so...then go buy it? I'm so confused. It's almost like renting SOCOM.

I guess the reviews and the feedback from the hundreds of people in the multiplayer beta are enough for me. That and the European demo I played last week. It's not like this is an iffy title like Haze.

this is no surprise to me, this is a definite rental for sure. it supposedly has a short single player campaign and relies too heavily on its online (read: NO SPLIT SCREEN) multiplayer. they may have benefited by releasing a better demo to turn renters into buyers.. not that the game wont still sell a ton, cause it will.

If you dont like the demo at all then its not your kinda game... if you like it and want more! go buy it! and support your system and guerilla!

You can't buy them from gamefly until several months after release. At least you couldn't when i was signed up. Of course i never got a Newly released game until several months after release any ways.

hey it's cool to see a ps3 game topping the gamefly list. They most likely plan to buy the game from gamefly at the used price for a new game, plus if you've been a member long eough you get an additional 5 to 10 % off....... New game for 30% off is a grea deal.The demo is cool but too short, the online beta was long and i loved it, so for me it's a day one buy!

Isn't this the same as asking why people rent movies? I'd wager that most people play most of their games once through completely. If you have no interest in playing any multiplayer that may be available renting makes for a good option. Just as a quick example, say you rent a game in which you are only interested in the single player campaign and that without the renting option you would have purchased the game. The 1-game-at-a-time plan at Gamefly is $16. Assuming the game is $60 new, renting via Gamefly just saved you enough money to pay for roughly 4 months of Gamefly. Except during those 4 months you'll be able to play a lot more than 1 game for the same price.
Obviously you can resell a puchased game, but even taking that into consideration the economics of why people use a service like Gamefly is quite obvious.

You can buy 8 games a year at $60 for a total of $480, lets say you sell each one for 50% of what you paid at $30 when your done, you end up paying $240 after all is said and done. 2 at a time from gamefly is $240 a year. So you would have to play more than 8 games a year not 4 like someone else said for it to be worth it. So even if you decide to buy them at what 20% off which would be $48, thats an additional $384 on top of the $240. I dont see that as being frugal. The other advantages to purchasing are that you can play any of the 8 you want at any time, can usually get them for less than $60 during sales or even less if buying used. You dont have to wait for a game to arive 2 months down the road. If you didnt like one of the games after a few days of playing you could probably sell it for near what you paid for it. Who even has the time to play more than 8 games a year? Netflix I can understand if you dont have premium cable/sattelite, but gamefly is far from economical.

Oh I just checked gamefly's website to confirm price, its actually 22.95 for 2 at a time, so for a year it would be $275.40. That means Im upping the 8 to 9 games a year in the other comment. which would be $270 after you sell them all. You would have to rent at least 10 games a year for it to be more economical. Last year I purchased 2 at full price last year, 3 new on sale, and another 3 used for less than $30 used. So I spent about $320 for 8 games. I would rather pay $320 to have 8 at a time than $275.40 to have 2 at a time and be able to sell or trade them when Im done.

Depends on how many games you play. Eight games really isn't that much when you are renting. I use Gamefly and generally get AT LEAST one game per month. Plus renting allows you to try out games that maybe you wouldn't have wanted to risk full price on. At worst you try it out for a day or two and then send it back for a different one.
Also, you're being rather generous assuming your going to get 50% of the value of your game back when you sell it. Most trade-in shops won't even give you that on very new games. Maybe you'll come close to that value on the hottest new game within a couple weeks of release. But if you're going to be returning it that quickly then you may as well have rented. You could, of course, sell games to fellow gamers and maybe get more money on a newer game, but in many cases you'll have to deal with shipping and the associated charges unless you less locally. And, of course, your also ignoring sales tax and/or shipping (if bought online) in your examples... most people are going wind up paying on or the other unless they find a great deal online.
I'm not saying there aren't other ways to handle this. You yourself brought up buying games on sale or used. But each has potential drawbacks. For example, most newer used games only sell for $5-10 less at stores that do trade-ins. Older games have better prices, but then you've got to wait for that. You can sometimes find a fellow gamer selling a used game for a decent price, but then you've got to do the footwork yourself and track these bagains down, work out the deal, and then make payment and hope the person was legit.
At this point it's also worth noting that places like Gamefly sell used games too. It's not like just because you rent you can't take advantage of other deals. Also, as someone else mentioned, Gamefly offers you the option to keep games you like. I've had brand new releases that I had to option keep for $45. The savings alone on a new release pays for a month of service.
BTW, you can change your Gamefly plan by month if you want. I generally bump my plan down to 1 per month during the slower portions of the year and then bump it to 2 games per month as the holiday season approaches. So it's not like I'm paying the $22.95 each month. And even if I was, I'd likely just play more games and try out older games skipped. Either way I can easily the best value for my money.
Anyway, again, there are other ways to save money, but renting is just as useful as any of the others and becomes more economical if you play a lot of games. If you only play a few games a year, then yeah, something like Gamefly likely isn't for you. But if you're the type of person that plays 1 or more games a month and doesn't want to wait for used games to reach decent prices then you should consider Gamefly. I know people that never play new games. They just wait until a game has been out for a few months then try to find a good deal on it used or on sale at a store new. I'm too impatient for that, but it works for them. Gamefly works for me.
