Unsurprisingly, Konami's grandpa-spy sim
Metal Gear Solid 4 sold extremely well across the globe -- so well, in fact, that the game
has reached the ever prestigious Platinum Range in Europe, an honor bestowed to titles that reach sales upward of 400,000 within their first year on the market. A Platinum edition of the game will hit European store shelves on March 5, bringing with it some slightly updated box art and a discounted price of EUR 29.95 (or GBP 19.99).
Hopefully, the game will follow suit by qualifying for
Greatest Hits status in North America, an honor that brings a similar discount to $29.99, as well as a provocative crimson jewel case. We've begun growing our
unsettling math teacher moustaches in feverish anticipation.

NOW HOW ABOUT TROPHIES?
il_duce620 @ Feb 16th 2009 2:41PM
Amen to that, dude... I loved the game when I played through it, but I'd be much more motivated to play through it a second time if I was getting trophies for it...
Jerses @ Feb 16th 2009 2:01PM
Platinum trophie with that? no?
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 1:59PM
Why would they announce it? Their sales will be crap in the last few weeks of premium pricing and everyone will wait until the price gets lowered.
Don't get me wrong, it's great news, but I'm confused why they'd announce it early like this. It's the same reason they'll deny price drops a week before they drop the system price $100, you know?
Game_playa @ Feb 16th 2009 2:16PM
How come Europe gets it 5 cents cheaper!! DAMN YOU EUROPE!!
/jk
Ico77 @ Feb 16th 2009 3:48PM
Yes. With that 5c I'll save in Europe I look forward to putting towards the $50 odd extra we have to pay for Rock Band type games than the USA! Bargain! :)
MattLive @ Feb 16th 2009 3:02PM
Trophies like now, please?
RasenganFury @ Feb 16th 2009 2:48PM
MGS4 had a $10 price drop within its first year of release and yet Uncharted has been out for nearly 2 years and no price drop. I wish it would just go greatest hits already so i can buy it >.
Game_playa @ Feb 16th 2009 2:51PM
STILL hasn't sold enough to go plat. Buy it now to support Naughty Dog!
Ico77 @ Feb 16th 2009 4:03PM
Now Uncharted has gone cheap in the UK. Recently bought it and completed it. I'm a little late to the PS3 party (been xboxing for a while since my PS2 went kaput). Who needs fanboys? Uncharted was great. Can't wait for sequel although I'll have to... many months!
Patrick @ Feb 17th 2009 12:34PM
Uncharted was selling for $41.99 for the longest time on Newegg. It's back up close to $60 now, though.
MRB1G @ Feb 16th 2009 2:59PM
:-) yay now i can buy this game, even though I have completed it already.
jarhead906 @ Feb 16th 2009 3:03PM
Anyone else annoyed by the NA box art? I was hoping for the traditional MGS art (see: badass) but that was reserved for the Japanese I guess.
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 3:07PM
MGS4 going Platinum. No, not that kind. :(
But anyway, yeah (posted a comment, won't show, sorry if it reposts)
Why are they announcing this now? Don't get me wrong, it's great for customers, but isn't it bad for business? They could make some extra money right before it goes to Platinum, but no, sales will plummet until it goes on budget price. It's the same reason Sony will deny a price drop within a week of dropping the system price $100.
slycooper_rocker @ Feb 16th 2009 10:01PM
there would still be people who want it who haven't bought it yet. not everyone reads gaming news ya know.
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 11:00PM
True, but news spreads, and you can't underestimate word of mouth, especially with services like Twitter.
They won't have zero sales, obviously, but their sales WILL slow down significantly before it goes up again (possibly higher than it was recently). I'm no financial expert, but I would think that, like I said, when Sony denied price cuts and then instantly cut the price, it sucks from a customer standpoint, but for system sales, it was probably the best situation for them. They would have had a huge drop in sales leading up to the price drop.
slycooper_rocker @ Feb 17th 2009 6:07PM
good point.
JuanDHexen @ Feb 16th 2009 3:12PM
i think they should change the greatest hits in the us for the platinum, the case looks a lot better
bluesky_v2.01 @ Feb 16th 2009 3:12PM
Aww . . . I read the title hastily and saw "Metal Gear" and "5" in the same sentence . . . got all excited for a moment.
rohan @ Feb 16th 2009 3:33PM
lol that made my day lol
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 3:45PM
Yeah, same thing--as I'm sure you can see in the comments--with people seeing "going Platinum" as "getting Platinum," as in trophy.
Kudos to the one who wrote the title. :)
Longhorn4Life @ Feb 16th 2009 3:19PM
Cool, more people need to play this game......except for Xbots
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 3:23PM
Why not people with Xbox 360s? Why can't they enjoy the game too? I don't understand this fanboyism. Why not let everyone enjoy it?
I don't have a 360 and I love my PS3, but really, who cares if it goes multiplatform?
Longhorn4Life @ Feb 16th 2009 3:36PM
Im pretty sure Sony cares
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 4:56PM

linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 8:08PM
Oh, sorry, I reposted my previous comment. Here's what I meant to say:
Sure, it's great for Sony to count on MGS4 as a system seller, but I was referring to the customers. There's no benefit to PS3 owners if it stays exclusive over it being multiplatform. There's no disadvantage to people like you and me if, for some reason, Konami wants to make it multiplatform.
Also, I don't about you, but I really like hearing about games like BioShock and Mass Effect 2 possibly as well. I also like hearing about games like Final Fantasy XIII and Devil May Cry 4. Let everyone play everything. Don't take it too seriously.
Levi @ Feb 16th 2009 3:35PM
Thank GOD they didn't push this post to the main Joystiq.
vendivicividi555 @ Feb 26th 2009 1:50AM
the funny thing is my science teacher has a moustache like that not my math teacher.
Crimson_Ryan @ Feb 16th 2009 4:07PM
There will never be trophies because MGS4 is not integrated with the Playstation Network.
Its pretty lame, because there would have been 60 trophies in the least.
j.howlett @ Feb 16th 2009 4:32PM
thats only mgo
linebeginstoblur @ Feb 16th 2009 4:55PM
No, that's not necessary. I'm pretty sure you don't even need a PSN account to earn trophies. All MGS4 needs is a patch to put them in.
There's absolutely no reason for a game like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to connect to the PlayStation Network, yet it still supports trophies.
Innuendo @ Feb 17th 2009 6:32AM
Again 1€ = 1$... WTF?
