SR2 rocked my world last year: that was one fun game.
Great deal.
Wentyy @ Feb 24th 2009 1:53PM
Wow, such a fun and cool game, get it!
JuanDHexen @ Feb 24th 2009 1:59PM
I am a Gta guy, i don't really know much about this game is it worth the 35 bucks.
Neuromancer @ Feb 24th 2009 2:11PM
Yes it's worth it. This game is a lot more fun than GTA4 plus you can play the whole thing through in co-op with a friend.
Gavin @ Feb 24th 2009 3:04PM
Yes and No...
3 Yeses
- your garage can hold infinite vehicles, and can 'respawn' vehicles you've lost along the way, and can spawn vehicles TO custom shops where you can then upgrade them
- the side missions all gain you various perks or unlockables. (clothes, unique cars, gang customization options, reduced price for clothes/property customization/food/car customization and so on) and side quests have a lot more variety than GTA4's did.
- the game is easy to jump into, easy to pick up and play when you want (side missions are short, story missions have gracious checkpoints, and you can REPLAY MISSIONS from your cribs -- which GTA should have implemented years ago IMHO)
3 Noes
- SR2's controls are okay, but often frustrating. Even after tweaking them I don't like the driving control layout (always looking backwards with R1 by mistake because I want that button to be my break) and the helicopter controls are nearly unusable. (rotation is done with L3 and R3, which is extremely difficult to do cleanly while turning the sticks and using the shoulders to climb and drop altitude). I also have a strong dislike for melee on the gun triggers and the weapon/item select is sometimes very slow to 'pop up' when you click the O button.
- SR2 is glitchy. I've had crashes. Ive bought safehouses/cribs and then had them 'go away' for reasons unknown and had to buy them again. Audio can go out. Pedestrians talking outside your car can mute your radio volume inside your car. This is GTA3/Vice city quality Oops territory.
- The most important and most negative aspect of SR2: it is quite poorly designed. Animations look great, but the rag dolling feels very stiff (more like 'faked' than actually generated with a physics engine) driving feels stiff, weightless, almost like your playing with toy cars (if you've played the Godfather game you will know what I mean) there are tons of vehicles, but they dont have a lot of personality (control wise) and are generally ugly, the hand break and camera arent as clean or consistent or 'real world' as GTA, and even shooting feels sloppy. (you can head shoot, but legs and arms are just part of the body... and hit-detection is not stellar) It is very easy to have bullets 'bounce' off of nothing in the air (when near corners or geometry) or simply miss all together.
Closing:
SR2 is almost totally the opposite of GTA4. SR2 is more casual, has more variety, more friendly, with lots of little things to do that all get you rewards. SR2 is not nearly as well designed from a control, physics, coding, and graphics stand point. Over all, I got the most out of this game turning down the difficulty to easy, skipping activities if/when they start to irritate me, and play drunk
hope that helps
GG

Thanks for the short story Gavin, Based on the points you made probably won't pick it up because the reason i liked gtaiv was the realism it had. This sounds like an alternative version of San Andreas but not as good.
Jon Acheson @ Feb 24th 2009 4:51PM
For pure sandbox fun, it's hard to beat. It feels a lot like San Andreas, in a good way. Tons of customization and minigames, and lots of fun.
I traded in GTAIV to buy it, and IMHO I traded up.
dylan @ Feb 24th 2009 2:09PM
Do you remember fun things about the older GTA games, like customizing your character, tons of weapons of mass destruction, A wide range of vehicles, including a spaceship, and side missions that are actually fun? There you have SR2. I'm no fanboy, I'm playing TLAD right now, and liking the gameplay and story, but it sure is making me miss the fun of SR. I don't wanna spend all day going on Man-dates.
Arnie @ Feb 24th 2009 2:15PM
Already bought. Looked fun but was planning to rent it but this deal works out.
Gary @ Feb 24th 2009 2:17PM
sweet thanks. just ordered.
Gavin @ Feb 24th 2009 2:41PM
too bad i already own it. Between SR2 and Mercenaries 2, I wish I'd just waited a few months extra and saved 50$ between 'em.
ah well, I'm enjoying them well enough anywho
rgoff31 @ Feb 24th 2009 3:07PM
Looks like I beat the crowd =) I had this in my google alert mailbox this morning.
Sean @ Feb 24th 2009 3:19PM
GAH!! so just got it used on ebay like a week ago!!! great game though! played it about 17 hours since I got it 4 days ago. It is a blast. At this price a great bargain. Lots of fun and a patch is awaiting confirmation from microsoft which will fix..hopefully..some of the bugginess.
bonini @ Feb 24th 2009 4:27PM
I to just got this on ebay last week for $30 used, so I don't feel like I got too bad of a deal but new and Collector's edition would have been worth it for $5. I bought Bioshock at full price as well only to have it drop down two weeks later.
This game is really fun though I can't decide if I like it better then GTA or not, if anyone is on the fence about it I would suggest getting it, especially at this price.
Erroneus @ Feb 24th 2009 3:42PM
Fix some trophies for this game and I'm all there. If they can't bother fixing trophies and making it stable, then will not bother buying it.
DavidJuaquin @ Feb 24th 2009 7:18PM
I'd love to buy & play this game but sadly, this game has no trophies.
William Graessle @ Feb 25th 2009 11:02AM
