Dante's Inferno fires up new 'go to hell' trailer
The God of War comparisons used to describe the video game adaptation of Dante's Inferno are rather evident in the new "Go to Hell" trailer, courtesy of Eurogamer.
The dark atmosphere and brooding musical score of EA's new action title mimics the vibes felt in SCEA's God of War games, especially the new one. The two stories also share obvious parallels: trips to the underworld and epic-scale battles against mythical creatures. We're not saying Dante's Inferno will be just another clone. We're just saying, if you've liked that other game, then you might like this one too. Give that "source" link a click!

Indeed, I love GOW, I'm pretty sure I'll like this if lives to the hype.
Shadsy @ Feb 24th 2009 2:40PM
This has so amazingly nothing to do with Dante's Inferno that it's actually awesome again. These guys need to do The Great Gatsby next.
Pureshooter @ Feb 24th 2009 5:14PM
Faust Person Shooters?
No?
Shadsy @ Feb 24th 2009 5:44PM
Personally I'd like to see them adapt The Castle first.
Courtney @ Feb 24th 2009 2:39PM
But which circle of hell will be populated by Activision executives?
gamepete64 @ Feb 24th 2009 2:43PM
Wtf, this game looks crazy weird. It's very wispy.
The Baron @ Feb 24th 2009 3:10PM
I was thinking that - wispy is a word that summed up everything in this trailer.
Dirty @ Feb 24th 2009 2:42PM
When did kratos join the dragon clan?
Hyams @ Feb 24th 2009 2:44PM
It's so weird, knowing that the soft voiced voice-over is coming from a muscle-bound demon killer. Seriously, he sounds like a lecturer from a University, the sort who's voice gently lulls students to sleep.
I get that Dante was a poet in real life, but that voice really just doesn't mesh with him being a bad-ass Crusader. (Actually, come to think of it, him being a poet doesn't really mesh with him being a bad-ass Crusader either.)
Also, his name's Dante and he kills demons in an over-the-top-manner? Didn't we already get a game about that?
iFester @ Feb 24th 2009 2:47PM
Looks like I'll be dreaming about crazy teeth creatures tonight.
rogXue @ Feb 24th 2009 2:52PM
Always wanted to read Dante's Inferno but the wording turned me off (not smart enough I guess). Hope this is an entertaining rendition of it, should be interesting.
Duke @ Feb 24th 2009 3:10PM
There are a lot of different versions that were translated by different people. I've read a few versions over the years, and some are more poetic than others. The book is truly a must read and you should try to find one that you enjoy the style of.
Also, this trailer makes the game look pretty badass - GoW clone or not.
Neuromancer @ Feb 24th 2009 4:03PM
I think this will have about as much to do with the book as Uwe Boll's movies have to do with the games they're based on.
Yaanu @ Feb 24th 2009 4:36PM
UWE BOLL PRESENTS

EA seem to be taking a lot of risk with new IP....... I LIKE IT!
joeybeast @ Feb 24th 2009 4:49PM
I guess you don't own EA stocks.
emeuvepe @ Feb 24th 2009 3:03PM
hmmm it seems like a very intresting game.. hopefully it be long and complex looking foward to but this one
jade_htown @ Feb 24th 2009 3:06PM
hmm it seems like a very intresting game.. hopefully it would be long and complex, really looking foward to this game its a must BUY
jaxsedrin @ Feb 24th 2009 3:06PM
Initial impression = not good.
You'd think someone about to "face his sins" would show a little humility and not go around kicking ass GoW-style with a huge Ninja Gaiden weapon.
I dunno... I guess I was just hoping for more thought-provoking adventure and less mindless action.

I agree with you completely, this should have been an adventure game. There's no good reason to take a story like Dante's Inferno and turn it into a beat-em-up.
SugarDaddy @ Feb 24th 2009 3:18PM
...except this game will suck big time. How about a game where you go to heaven and start ripping up all the devout? Isn't beating on all the tortured souls in hell a bit like kicking a dead horse?
Seems like a dumb game is all...
And I take every chance I can to bash this PoS. It's EA after all, so I don't feel bad either.
f disco @ Feb 24th 2009 3:27PM
dumb game?!?! holy crap did you see that multi-mouthed demon of a beast!!! That sH*t looked insane, i can't wait to tear demons and sins and souls up, that trailer was bad. ass. you all must love to hate or something.
f disco @ Feb 24th 2009 3:29PM
dumb game!??! did you see that multi-mouthed demon creature?!?! that trailer was off the chain! i can't wait to sink that demon-killer of a sword thing into some monsters! send me to hell i'll tear shi. up!
Freeze @ Feb 24th 2009 3:53PM
To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing an actual game that'll take you through what hell would look like or what it would seem like. Something like what has shown in Constantine. A good representation of hell that could keep the player on edge.
Shadsy @ Feb 24th 2009 5:00PM
I could imagine a game pulling off a really unsettling Hell. Something like the end to Condemned 1, but in the underworld instead of a farm. Or even Doom 3's depiction of Hell, which scared the bejesus out of me (especially the flying ragdoll at the beginning).
Unfortunately, this probably isn't that game. :(
WRE @ Feb 24th 2009 3:54PM
Test.
JuanDHexen @ Feb 24th 2009 3:56PM
It needs god war comparisons to help it succeed .I think I'll pass and wait for the real thing.
WRE @ Feb 24th 2009 3:57PM
I can't believe how fucking dumb this "book port" is going to be. Pretty soon some dipshit will let their kid play it for class instead of reading the book and then he'll act like "the video games" pulled a fast one on him when the teacher finds out and gets pissed. This..I...parts of my brain are dying I didn't even know I had. I gotta go.
WRE @ Feb 24th 2009 3:57PM
Can I not say "fuck" anymore? Why do my comments keep disappearing?
WRE @ Feb 24th 2009 3:58PM
So...no more swearing on Joystiq?
WRE @ Feb 24th 2009 3:58PM
Yep. That's it.
John @ Feb 24th 2009 4:02PM
This isn't anything like Dante's inferno at all.
Vander @ Feb 24th 2009 4:33PM
EA should be sorry for going against your imagination picture of how it really is Dante's inferno.

Wow I don't think a single trailer has ever turned me off of a game quite so much.
Nevers @ Feb 24th 2009 4:29PM
yes... of course Dante's Inferno is a total rip off.... a book written in 1308.
I'm sorry... Who Made Who? ~ AC/DC
Bouille @ Feb 24th 2009 4:47PM
Looks more like a "Ryu Hayabusa goes to hell" than a GoW clone. I mean cmon a ninja weilding a scythe ...
CH3BURASHKA @ Feb 24th 2009 5:29PM
After seeing the CG trailer at the VGA Awards, I was intrigued enough to pick up the Divine Comedy. About halfway through now, and the trailer (and complementary interview at IGN) completely shits on the story. The guy interviewed said that yes, there is little to NO actual violence so they decided to 'spice things up'. The trailer to me seemed like a medieval European Ninja Gaiden; even the weapon is a carbon copy of the Scythe weapon from NG(2?) (sorry don't know its name).
I am still interested in the premise; I just wish they didn't decide to take a 'creative license' from the book by making it what it was never meant to be.
Robert Maynard @ Feb 24th 2009 8:46PM
I'd like to see some gameplay before rushing to judgment, but if it is anything like this trailer we could be looking at some kind of God of War/Doom 3/Shadow of the Colossus combination, which, frankly, could be divine.
Honestly, who could possibly care whether this stuck to the allegorical content or even the basic narrative of the original? Hey let's make a game about travelling through heaven and hell, without weapons, accompanied by an angel! Howzabout no.
With all of the political commentary now literally meaningless, what's interesting about Inferno and the Divine Comedy in general, the only reason that *anybody* still gives a crap about it today, is that it was a project of crafting the details of completely alien metaphysical realms, decked out in religious hoodoo and soul-shaking weirdness. This appears to have the same spirit as the Inferno, which is to say it's solely focused on crafting an interactive experience around the depiction of a pure nightmare realm from medieval mythology. While there were glimpses of it in Doom 3 (I'm thinking of that awesome reconstructing platform part), this gen is the basically the earliest time designers can manipulate their tech so much to create truly *weird* game spaces - with shifting, amorphous architecture for example, which would have looked dumb before, because of processing limitations.
Ultimately what's important is the fantastical imagination on display, not the precise details of what some 14th century poet not-so-secretly ranting about the government came up with. Yeesh. If it's anywhere near as cool and well produced as Dead Space was I'll be pleased.
...I mean, it couldn't be lamer than Painkiller, or freakin' Jericho.
jc @ Feb 25th 2009 4:50AM
Was'nt there supposed to be a game about the 4 horseman? And you pay as "war"? Is that still under development or has it been Forgotten ?
Draghignazzo @ Apr 12th 2009 1:28PM
They totally have to make the Malebranche Demons major bosses. Also, where the crap is Virgilius, the guide through Hell and Purgatory?
Also, Dante's voice totally works. His slayage of massive demons....not so much. He was quite the meek one in the actual story, and he makes mistakes and was not really a "hero" so much as a "protagonist." The "hero" of the story would probably have been Virgil.
Anyway...Let's see some Malebranche action!! Malacoda, Calcabrina, Barbariccia, Cagnazzo, Rubicante, Alichino, Scarmiglione, Libicocco, Draghignazzo, Ciriatto, Farfarello, Graffiacane, and that one that never had a name, woo!!
