FFXIII still on track for '09 Japanese release
Final Fantasy XIII director and writer Motomu Toriyama wants to dispel recent delay concerns that have befallen the flagship title. There was worry that Dragon Quest IX's push back would affect FFXIII's schedule; however, that does not appear to be the case. Toriyama tells Famitsu that "development is going favorably for a 2009 launch."
While Japanese gamers can be comforted by this reprieve, worldwide audiences will still have to sit it out a bit longer. Didn't you know? A 2009 launch for FFXIII is only for Japan.

Alun @ Feb 25th 2009 8:47PM
i agree, its ridiculous how long they have been discussing the game and the waiting period. ive gone off the game now to be honest, i will prob be interested when it eventually does come out but the hype is well and truly over for me.

Really Square I just don't give a rats ass anymore.

Well, reading the original article, the nuance is a little different.
The development is going as planned and will be finished within the year 2009 for the suspected release.
BUT, thats just the development teams plan.
The company's plan is a total different thing.
The development maybe going as planned and they maybe able to finish developing the game for release in 2009, but looking at it in a business perspective,
Square-Enix, or should I say Mr.Wada, may highly likely delay it to next year,
because the delay of Dragon Quest IX.
This is most peoples guess in Japan, who actually read the article.

Out of all the possible games up and coming to the PS3. I think FF will be the cream of the crop.
tboy123 @ Feb 25th 2009 11:02PM
really?
I was interested in this game. To bad it took them to long to release it. I will get it someday when it is in the bargain bin.
But come on, "cream of the crop?"... May I introduce; GOWIII, Uncharted 2, MAG, Killzone 2 (FRIDAY!!!)... Amazing PSN releases coming out (Fat Princess). If anything, this title may get overlooked a little due to the amount of time it has taken them to finally release it.

I agree they have stalled the game almost to the point it will be forgotten, but at the same time this will benefit it. There is no deny SE can make quality games, and with this title being the coming out party for them on the PS3, it is more than critical it be fantastic. Now you have mentioned titles I be all means do not undercut. However, personally I have no interest in Uncharted, it just wasn't interesting enough to me. GOW, well that will be insane no doubt, fat princess can't wait for a good laugh, it'll be a blast, Killzone 2, FRIDAY, add me up I can't wait, and MAG. Well if MAG ever comes to fruition, it'll have to overcome a lot of issues, and hopefully they do. My #1 concern is with voice chat, maybe people will be in squads, but even then it shouldn't mean you can't hear other mates, maybe there will be channels I don't know. Back to my point, with all these titles coming out, by the time FF comes through, you may have forgotten it, but you will probably then be excited and who knows, it may live up to the hype, which I do because I've been waiting for an epic tale, something I can pump lots of hours into and it continues to develop well... meh, btw add me on psn for some good killzone 2 action!

As long as their are zipper and leather strap fetishists, Final Fantasy will sell like hotcakes.
Still, is this wait unnerving anybody but me?
Leonhart @ Feb 26th 2009 12:05AM
hmm.. how much sooner do you think japan will get it because it's a PS3 exclusive there? Anyone who thinks the american release won't see any delays because of development on 360 is just being ignorant. I mean come one, they had no problem releasing infinite undiscovery on 360 a year before the ps3 version, why should we have to wait for the 360 version of a game series that's been on a playstation platform for quite some time?
and please don't respond with "but final fantasy was originally on nintendo!"
i know

Because Microsoft knows how valuable the FF name is, thus paid a lot of money..
I love Square but i hope they aren't sacrificing quality for money.
Copland @ Feb 26th 2009 6:01AM
Yeah, I really hate how MS does things...(which most companies do..)
And about exclusivity in Japan, there are rumors that it might become a non-exclusive.
But its just a rumor.
BUT, I can't say it will happen or it won't happen at this point.
Last week when SO4 was released,
the hardware sales for the Xbox360 went up to 26000 from 9000.
And thats a big boost if you think of how weak the 360 is at this point.
So I was thinking, there maybe a possibility that Square-Enix will change their mind about exclusivity in Japan by looking at these numbers.(Which means, if they can be sure that releasing the Xbox360 version of FFXIII would make profits in the Japan market.)
I don't think FFXIII is a cream of the crop in the U.S, because GoW III would be more effective to bring more users to the PS3 than FFXIII for U.S. users I think.
But for the Japan market, I think FFXIII is the most valuable asset.
So now is the time to for Sony to use money and keep FFXIII an exclusive in Japan.
And if SCE could reduce the price at the same time, I think PS3 is going to do very well in Japan. And I really hope it does.
Leonhart @ Feb 27th 2009 9:45PM
Honestly I could care less if it stays an exclusive in japan. The reason being that the game already has to be developed on the 360, that means it has to be able to run on 2 different platforms that work differently (ps3 has 8 processors, 360 has unified RAM). that means any sacrifice in quality has already been made. my point is whether the game comes out on 360 in japan doesn't matter because just the fact that it has to be released on 2 platforms anywhere means the quality will suffer.
The one thing i can take solace in is that XIII versus is still an exclusive. That game had me more excited the whole time (that main character with the floating swords and the teleporting looks SICK). If XIII versus or Kingdom Hearts 3 get announced for 360 I swear to god i will swim to japan and take over square.
And before anyone says "you're just mad because you have to share your toy!"
no i'm not, i'm mad because my toy isn't going to be as good as it could have been if it was only on playstation. If metal gear, killzone or god of war had to be developed on 360 as well does anyone think they would be the same game they are now?

Dymphna @ Feb 26th 2009 8:38AM
It's a good thing (especially for those of us that speak Japanese) that the PS3 can play Japanese region games with no problem.
Still one of the best under-touted features of the PS3 that makes it such a good buy, that was one of the biggest reasons for me getting it over a 360 honestly. As a frequent importer, that one little advantage is HUGE
Reuben @ Feb 26th 2009 6:02PM
Final Fantasy is one of my favorite franchises, but I not like the way Square treats it when it comes to the U.S. They release none of the soundtracks here, half the merchandise, and of course we have to wait months to get the actual game after them. It's like "we have what you want, but we'll only give it to you if you beg, and then you better feel damn lucky to get it."
Final Fantasy is so huge, that I think a worldwide release, or at least a simultaneous Japan and U.S release, should not be out of the question. Having to wait six months for a FF game is ridiculous, considering the market for it here.
Sean Cruz @ Apr 1st 2009 2:09AM
Previous version of Final Fantasy was become much popular but I do not think there is any relations between JRGP because the people play it with very enjoy and that make it popular.
