Rumorang: PSP2 brings dual analog nubs, touch screen by Christmas
Rumors pertaining to the PSP2 (sometimes called PSP-4000) seem to be getting wilder and more exciting as the days go by. First, we heard about the UMD drive's removal and the addition of sliding screens, but now it's all touch screens (that slide) and dual analog nubs. According to PocketGamer, who apparently spoke with a developer working on the new hardware (and not Dave Perry), all of these new features will be available later this year when the PSP2 ships sometime before Christmas.
If we're following Sony's usual timeline of events, we'll see the new hardware unveiled at E3 -- just like the PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 in the previous years.

That mockup would be the perfect PSP if it had another stick on the other side and they were shaped differently.
JuanDHexen @ Apr 7th 2009 12:15PM
I really wish this rumor were true so I can start saving for it.
drdre74 @ Apr 7th 2009 12:21PM
not gonna happen

Rumor: PSP2 brings soft serve ice cream, spiritual fulfillment by Christmas.
Jon Acheson @ Apr 7th 2009 1:19PM
And of course, world peace.
But what I really want, truth be told, is for it to have two nubs, and cost less than a DSi.
I kind of doubt that will happen, this being Sony, but it would be nice. And seemingly doable, since they won't have the cost of the UMD drive to overcome any more.
Erroneus @ Apr 7th 2009 12:36PM
I heard they are gonna bundle it with Diablo 3....
rohan @ Apr 7th 2009 1:06PM
I think ur wrong i heard it was going to be bundled with Duke Nukem Forever
jok3r0314 @ Apr 7th 2009 12:38PM
this is totally going to happen i already have $250.00 put up to get it on its release not sure what a touch screen would do though
Popfrogs @ Apr 7th 2009 2:46PM
A touch screen would steal some of the thunder from the iPhone games that seem to be picking up steam. That and the DS/DSi which have had touch screens forever.
Then again touch screen games are usually super gimmicky, with the devs throwing in touch just for the hell of it, like an afterthought, rather than crafting a game mechanic that makes it a clever addition.

Not getting all excited about nothing. I'll wait til its announced and then act accordingly...

Please no touchscreen, yes umd+bluetooth+camera+480p+3g or 4g+60 to 120gb
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Apr 7th 2009 6:28PM
all those sound pretty good except for the native 3G or 4G support. i don't want to have to go to AT&T or where ever they would sell them to get a PSP2. i like the idea of true mobile gaming (ie. not even tied to WiFi) but they should do it by way of an optional attachment that works like a mobile broadband card/USB stick.
Nobledevil @ Apr 7th 2009 6:37PM
SoCoolCurt, that's exactly what I want: an optional USB drive that gives me my wi-fi. Just about everyone's job has a computer of some sort, so plugging it in and not requiring drivers outside of the stick would be lovely.
tmontana213 @ Apr 7th 2009 1:23PM
Well I'm pretty sure there's going to be two nubs; Sony would be complete morons if they didn't. I'm not so sure about the touch screen though.
istuffedsunny @ Apr 7th 2009 1:31PM
Let's hope this one has more good games. I like my PSP but when it comes to quality GAMING it doesn't hold a candle to a certain other handheld.
lego91994 @ Apr 7th 2009 1:32PM
all these rumours are getting kind of silly. Sony just announced a bunch of games for the current PSP system, do you really think they are going to release another PSP so soon? Maybe a tweak that uses the same software with some minor enhanements, but I really can't see them releasing a "PSP2" for atleast another year.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 7th 2009 3:16PM
That's what I thought, but with the DSi starting to seriously branch into some previously PSP-only areas (multimedia, downloadable games, etc.) I can see why Sony could do it.
Plus, if they are able to reposition the PSP brand into a more mainstream handheld (like everyone expected when it first launched) and also bolster up the anti-piracy level (to stop your grandma from downloading GTA: Vice City Stories) then it would really benefit the company and hopefully soften those losses a bit.
On the business side of things, this is really the best time for Sony to launch a new PSP. For what exactly it will be like, that's going to take a while. But I'm definitely keeping my eyes and ears open for E3.
Keefe @ Apr 7th 2009 1:39PM
A better design would protect the screen rather than the keyboard. That image is based on cell phone design and just doesn't make sense for the PSP.
sonicspike41 @ Apr 7th 2009 3:00PM
They should take that mockup and make it a flip screen rather than a sliding one. That way the harder exterior protects both the keys and the screen.
sonicspike41 @ Apr 7th 2009 2:59PM
All it needs now is cellphone-capabilities and I'm sold. That mockup is just too damn sexy! Just throw in another 'stick on the right side.
Virtuous @ Apr 7th 2009 3:03PM
In the US the PSP is dying. Sony needs to do make dramatic moves ASAP.
TM @ Apr 7th 2009 3:23PM
watch sony deny it now.....
MRB1G @ Apr 7th 2009 3:44PM
@ Popfrogs
while i do agree, a new psp is most likely coming (if nintendo can do again i dont see why sony wouldnt) i do not agree on touchscreens being pure gimmicks as the DS which was built with a touch screen from day 1 has done considerably well (better than the PSP) and the iPhone while more gimmicky is incrediby popular among people for its touch screen (and motion-sensitive) app games.
celica_guy81 @ Apr 7th 2009 5:33PM
There will be a new psp within a year. Sony has to respond to the DSi most likely at E3. I also think sony will have a big E3 this year. PS3 price drop and a new PSP which I think sony will market as your Mobile media device with direct download content without umds, skype, and maybe the gps they never brought to the usa. It will be more of a companion to the PS3. I like this PSP http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/rumorang-psp-4000-details-leaked/ If it has a keyboard under the screen. The unprotected screen is not a big deal to me I use a screen film and none of my mobile screens have any damage.
arrness @ Apr 7th 2009 6:12PM
No dual analogs = No purchase
Thats just how it is.
Angel Mass @ Apr 7th 2009 6:12PM
When Is E3 Again? cant wait for a real PSP2
Nobledevil @ Apr 7th 2009 6:34PM
Whatever, I'm gonna buy it anyway so whatever it has I'll pay for it as long as it's not like $250.
I have quite a collection of great PSP games (pretty much none from the last half of 2008, of course), so as long as they do a better job with the next one of translating some of the awesome Japanese content I'll be happy.

It's rumortastic bs. I have family still working in the ind so I hear things. There's no PSP2, just a PSP4000. It shares some similarities to this tired ass rumor, but don't be thinking you'll have dual analogs and a touch panel. I'll just use the usual industry no comment on the slide up screen and the umd-less system bit. :)
mimicmaverick @ Apr 8th 2009 12:07PM
I think that a touch screen would suck, it's like they are turning it into a DS. i like the psp's design as it is now and i totally agree with adding another analog nub, that would make it less awkward to play FPS games, also they should make the screen more scratch-proof and they should get rid of that stinking internet browser and make a deal with opera to get operamini for psp.
Yo Sup J-Dogg! @ Apr 14th 2009 5:15PM
my dream psp (that could actually happen)...
-UMD Support (not releases, but support for ppl who still wanna play umd's)
-Memory Stick Support (again, for retro ppl)
-Internal Hard Drive (at least 8gb)
-All Games Downloadable (or as much as possible....)
-2 analog sticks
-2 more shoulder buttons (u could stick L2 & R2 directly behind where it says 'sony' on the psp-3000 and have it face parallel to the screen. or you could put them towards the bottom on the back, but still facing the same way)
