Next3D developing 3D movie service for PS3
Three dimensional movies are the new "it" thing in Hollywood. More and more movies (particularly animated films) are being presented in 3D -- and now the tech is jumping from the cinema to the home theater. Next3D is developing a downloadable application that allows users to browse and download 3D content directly to their PS3 systems. With the software, users will be able to access full 3D 1080p movies ... provided they have a TV that's capable of producing a 3D image.
This isn't the first time 3D will be utilized on the PS3. Earlier this year, Sony showcased 3D versions of WipEout HD and Gran Turismo 5 to attendees of CES.

Amazingly it doesn't cost no more than a regular TV, except one little thing. The active glasses are freaking up to 100 a piece or more for a good pair. Damn after you cover everyone your out some major dough. I mean 3D movies is definitely a event. You get 8 people scoping this out that's almost another grand!
tboy123 @ Apr 20th 2009 9:58PM
Riiiiight.
$1500 (TV) + $150 (emitter) + $600 (glasses) x (insert amount of family here)= more cash than I have.
I will be more interested as it drops in price... right before 4d enters the home, imagine smelling and feeling your games/movies... OK, don't. I don't blame you...
Anyway, That is when I will jump aboard this 3d.

i was at CES this year and tried most of the 3D products. when i tried nvidia's 3D glasses, there was definite a few hundred milliseconds of lag. it made guitar hero completely unplayable. LG's glasses were hard to spot for lag since you are just watching an image and not interacting. i didn't try out sony's demo, i was too busy looking at the jeopardy stage. but, when it all comes down to it, who is going to want to wear these obnoxious looking glasses? also, the nvidia glasses had to be charged, yes, charged, they have a battery, lame.

Nice to see Sony creating a whole new service for all those tens of people who own 3d TV's. Smart move.

Well, Sony isn't creating this particular "service," but it's just another bit of future-proofing that makes the PS3 kick even more ass. What was the 1080p market penetration when the PS3 came out in 2006? More and more TVs are becoming 3d-capable. I believe any HDTV with a 120Hz refresh rate can do it. My Samsung DLP can do it, and it's over a year and a half old. Bring that shit on!

It would be nice if sony could put the regular HD movies in the european store before they get into 3D !!!
Although this looks very promising.....
