PSP firmware 5.50 can't be cracked for the moment
We can't say we agree with Sony's countless efforts to thwart piracy via PSP firmware updates; in fact, the whole thing seems like kind of a waste of energy. But today, let's just take a moment to celebrate its struggle, for Sony has, with firmware 5.50, won! Sceners.org says the update "has the encryption tables changed (at least the 1g one), as it can't be decrypted with latest psardumper."
Sure, in the next sentence the site goes on to say that it likely won't be an issue. But for today Sony, you can stop pushing the boulder up that hill and take a well-earned break. Congrats.

.....as if hackers absolutely need to crack the software on day 1.
Poozle @ Apr 22nd 2009 11:43AM
I'm sure many times before they've changed the encryption tables and vary shortly after... welcome new custom firmware. I can't see this being much of a problem at all tbh.
Mazrael @ Apr 22nd 2009 11:46AM
new firmware! I think I just like updates.. even better it's hacker proof (for now at least) gonna go download this now..
pspgamer @ Apr 22nd 2009 11:51AM
thats great news for psp owners.....if this continues v can expect good games in the near future!!!!
Tim Parsons @ Apr 22nd 2009 11:51AM
Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo as well as all the movie studios and so on need to band together and Kill Piracy once and for all. Piracy is destroying everything it's just gone too far.
pspgamer @ Apr 22nd 2009 11:55AM
hope that more good news come along and the 3000 doesnt get iso/cso enabled :)
jok3r0314 @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:03PM
this may not be cracked but 5.03 has been just waitin for the hen
Kola @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:29PM
Finally. I hope this one sticks.
Dilcue @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:14PM
What is the point of this post? Don't get me wrong, I love my PSP as-is... UMDs and all. But no one wins with proprietary systems, especially when there is an opportunity here for community-based content without the ability to pirate software. That sounds like a fairer compromise to me.
I think it is obvious that Sony hasn't won, but is always in an on-going battle to keep up with piracy, something that is consistently rampant. Bottom line, this is a war that Sony can't win right now.
jaug1337 @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:36PM
Good thing I have 2 PSP's :)
A phat and Slim.. Phat = CFW.. other OFW!
Annoying, would actuely really like the new options on my phatCFW..
Is it just me or is Sony making the PSP more and more encrypted? (harder to crack?) Is it even the encryption? Hmm.. ? ANSWER SOMEONE!
jaug1337 @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:36PM
Thank god I have a 2 PSP's !
phat =CFW, slim =OFW!
Angel Mass @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:42PM
Wooow that is sick
Tep @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:57PM
Remember they said the same thing about 3.52? Yeah...that only gave birth to the godlike firmware m33 so be surprised if it happens again.
Draco @ Apr 22nd 2009 1:05PM
good. Piracy has no place in games. Movies is a different story due to theatres and music by radio, but games have nowhere but sales to make money.

"We can't say we agree with Sony's countless efforts to thwart piracy via PSP firmware updates"
What via is the way to thwart piracy on PSP then?
Frank @ Apr 22nd 2009 1:21PM
Probably because there aren't enough new features to make it really tantalizing to the hackers. The latest one over here is still 5.00.
InFaMoUs1- @ Apr 22nd 2009 1:40PM
not surprised, especially with HEN about to be released for the PSP 3000, 2000, and 1000. I read about this on quite a few sites already and that Sony patch the Tiff Exploit.
InFaMoUs1- @ Apr 22nd 2009 1:57PM
Just dont update duh
All kidding aside I read this on a few site yesterday but as always if someone has the time and resources to hack the PSP it probably will happen.
drdre74 @ Apr 22nd 2009 2:02PM
Hmmm, well I'm sure someone will find a work around for it. If not then so be it. I'm sure sony wants to put a stop to the hacking before LBP comes out.
dvjivuxvjoj34 @ Apr 22nd 2009 2:10PM
I Lol'ed
dabamf @ Apr 22nd 2009 2:28PM
These comments can't be cracked either...I don't see them!
Feba @ Apr 22nd 2009 2:44PM
I looked at the information page on one of my downloaded games, and it had 'start date', 'hours left', and 'expires on' fields in there. I don't remember seeing those before; did I just miss it, or was that added in this firmware update? Because if it was added, it could be a sign that they ARE preparing for UMD backups. I'll keep crossing my fingers, anyway.
Luis @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:02PM
I'll give them a week at the most to crack it
atastysammich @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:14PM
The problem I see here is that "take a break" won't be interpreted by Sony as "dedicate those resources to putting something worthwhile in firmware updates and making the thing less of a genuine hassle to do non-gaming things on" so much as "sit there and twiddle your thumbs until the inevitable crack, fix that, rinse and repeat." That it's taken them until now to make the system recognize subfolders absolutely does not bode well for the future of user-friendliness for the thing.
Blair Thiessen @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:21PM
Release FFVII on the Playstation Store and I'll stop using hacked Firmware.
Or just more PS1 games in general. Main reason I use hacked is so I can play my PS1 collection on the go.
I Al2x I @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:37PM
Uhhmm...This means absolutely nothing. Usually a new PSAR Dumper is created for each incremental update that Sony puts out. Sure, would love to see the piracy stop on the PSP, but this sure doesn't mean anything and isn't a warrant for news.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:23PM
I'm not sure how much of a difference that's going to make. At least they did something.
Burley25 @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:02PM
The people who get so pissed off at pirates are pissed because they aren't smart enough to figure out how to hack their psp and do it themselves. Everyone loves things for free!
sony boy @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:07PM
congrats.
SleepingPanda @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:48PM
Apparently, they've also disabled standby with the update. Makes me wonder what Sony's really up to.
m3nphls @ Apr 22nd 2009 9:11PM
its just matter of time...
stormtrooper190 @ Apr 22nd 2009 9:51PM

Emperor_Den_Den @ Apr 23rd 2009 12:01AM
man why can't I see the coments
ONi @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:13AM
So, now Sony will release a Public SDK and Homebrew Access?
Libra1989 @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:41AM
Is this anything new? didn't all firmware updates just beef up security?
miah @ Apr 23rd 2009 11:23AM
i reckon if sony added the ability to run unassigned application like the ipod touch and iphone then alot of people wont find the need for hacking but of course there are some people who do it for pirating.
Haruku @ Apr 23rd 2009 2:50PM
@ stormtrooper190:

I LOL'ed at this comment, then decided I should comment. So I created an account JUST FOR THAT.
