Konami has released more specifics on the new "Race Mission" mode and "Patriot" feature for
Metal Gear Online we first
told you about last week. First up, the Race Mission is aptly titled, as it sees two teams attempting to pass through racing game style checkpoints after tracking down their oh-so-adorable frog and duck KEROTAN and GA-KO items. The mode's rules state that if the item is dropped and not picked up in time, its team will have to seek it out at a random spawn point. We're only guessing that the match is won by whichever team passes through the most checkpoints with cuddly mascot in-hand, as Konami oddly left that bit out. All will be revealed come May 12.
Not forgotten in today's update was word of the Patriot system, which -- at least at first -- sounds like a cool reward for the game's best players. Basically, the game will select a random set of top players each week as "Patriots," granting them access to a Patriot .56mm "hand rifle" ... which has infinite ammo and doesn't require reloading. Let's see:
MGO's best players with infinite ammo and no need to reload. Sounds fair, right? We'll find out how it works out starting May 26.

Patriot sounds kinda like Hero from Warhawk aside from with Hero you get ALL Weapons and the ammo still runs out and needs to be reloaded....

oh and the Hero is not Hero for the ENTIRE game, just until they are killed or it picks another person
master811 @ May 11th 2009 6:50PM
which is pretty much the same as Gladiator mode from Timesplitters 2.
Oh how I loved that game. :(

There has to be a catch, like it fires rubber bullets or you lose score for using it or something.

inb4 "people still play MGO?"
HEY, I'LL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION BEFORE YOU ASK IT, YES PEOPLE DO - IT HAS A VERY STABLE, CONSISTANT COMMUNITY!

you get a +1 for not being an idiot
kentuckyfried @ May 11th 2009 7:18PM

DeathroW @ May 11th 2009 7:54PM

the login system is a pain and it's tough for noobs to get into it, but i see how it can be fun. but i was getting killed too much haha. the learning curve to me was even higher than warhawk!

I played MGO for about two months, since it was the first PS3 game I got. Then the MGO Reward store came and I couldnt get anything because I didnt have the expansion and I didnt know why I had to buy it off the internet and not the PS Store thus I was basically left out along with the other countless MGO players. That is the main reason me and my friends quit the game because we felt as though Konami left so many casual [;ayers in the dark. MGO was fun while it lasted for me and sometimes painful because of the annoying tactics some used. I tried playing it again and realized the only people who play MGO are hardcore players. If the first expansion ever became free for all users I'd get back on and try it for a bit just to see what I missed out on.

inb4 trophies are mentioned
kentuckyfried @ May 11th 2009 7:17PM
If anything, the Patriot should be assigned to any random players who are actively still playing MGO.
If it goes only to all the best players, those rounds are just going to be a bloodbath for anybody who's just a casual player. It the best players weren't headshot machines already...
j.howlett @ May 11th 2009 7:32PM
when i read about patriot before i thought they said it would go to random regular players and help build up their stats and no one would know who had it beforehand
kentuckyfried @ May 11th 2009 7:37PM
Hopefully, the Patriot will be assigned to any random players who are actively still playing MGO.

thatguy3579 @ May 11th 2009 7:47PM
MGO is terrible
Jampirow @ May 11th 2009 8:17PM
That's exactly what the mode is. ANY player can be a Patriot, not just the Top players. It was on the announcement, Joystiq got it wrong.
KwietStorm @ May 11th 2009 8:53PM
That's like giving a shark a machine gun
traceur_ryuk_shinigami @ May 12th 2009 12:04AM
With unlimited ammo.
trunks @ May 12th 2009 12:25AM
survivals will become even harder after they released the patriot I guess. Looking forward to it anyway...mgo is the best.
TEG3SH @ May 12th 2009 8:47AM
and no reload . ;)
stargateheaven @ May 12th 2009 8:59AM
Won't the people with the patriot rifle be the best players the following week because of the gun though??
Townbizz90 @ May 14th 2009 2:20AM
it's a handgun. And people will most likely use it like the mk23 with AA.
trunks @ May 12th 2009 2:45PM
I like the new mode, mgo 4 life
