VidZone launches June 11 with three weeks worth of content

VidZone, Sony's Europe exclusive free streaming music service, is on the cusp of launching. The date has been set for June 11, mere hours away, and SCEE has announced that you'll be able to enjoy a huge amount of content on day one. More specifically, there will be three solid weeks of content available to stream on launch day. The press release also promises that there's "much, much more on the way."
While these 10,000 videos are exclusive to Europe, there's nothing stopping people in the US from downloading it from the PlayStation Store via their European -- er, friend's -- account. Whether or not Sony has put an IP region lock on the software itself is unknown. We'll find out for sure tomorrow.

NEWBLOOD @ Jun 10th 2009 1:16PM
You will have to download from the EU PS Store.
karlwulfekote @ Jun 10th 2009 1:08PM
Question: Why aren't they planning on a US release? Just curious. This sounds like a really cool feature.
dr.ghettoblaster @ Jun 10th 2009 1:20PM
whoop de fuckin' doo. I bought a ps3 for gaming/blu-ray movies, not for music videos.
Csolo @ Jun 10th 2009 1:20PM
so this will be like pandora or something similar?
Mr.Petter @ Jun 10th 2009 1:35PM
They already announced it on june 4th.. http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/06/04/e3-interview-vidzone/
And it will most likely be IP region locked as everyone in the EU wont get access to Vidzone at the beginning. The following countries will get it on June 11th:
UK, Ireland, Australia, Italy, France, Spain and Germany
T-e-X @ Jun 10th 2009 1:37PM
and Denmark??? WTF!! arrrhhhhhhh
AshStampede @ Jun 10th 2009 1:45PM
Here is to hoping there is a IP block simply out of spite really. vidstore is exclusive to US and there is loads of stuff I am willing to give Sony money for but I suppose if I must watch it they want me to use other means and use the internet to get it.
Jerses @ Jun 10th 2009 2:40PM
i have a solution. ovguide
D_Average @ Jun 10th 2009 2:10PM
Dude. Just make a US account than, join the best country in the history of ancient and modern civilization.
AshStampede @ Jun 10th 2009 2:50PM
@ D_Average I have a US account, as well as a japanese, UK and Hong kong account. BUT the video store is block if you dont live in the USA even Canadians dont have access. Get your fact straight and...
@ Jeres what is ovguide (google search) so its like a search engine for tv and movie streams. Interesting.
AshStampede @ Jun 10th 2009 2:52PM
after first review alot of the sites this ovguide points too are US network tv websites which are also IP blocked. so yeah tvversity and eztv
D_Average @ Jun 10th 2009 3:33PM
I see. All the more reason to move here then!
AshStampede @ Jun 10th 2009 4:26PM
will you be my US visa sponser? would so move.
U U D D L R L R A B SELECT START @ Jun 10th 2009 1:45PM
Hrm, be an interesting way to drum up interest for new bands/album releases here in the US if publishers weren't so insistent on entrenching their distribution methods in business models that worked a decade ago, making them inherently phobic of any digital distribution method...
Sandman3621 @ Jun 10th 2009 1:46PM
I think it would be a smart move for Sony US to do something along these lines. Imagine being able to run Pandora while playing a game. Or maybe, as much as I dread it, an MTV style application that will let you watch music videos.
Just an idea.
ThermoPants @ Jun 10th 2009 1:56PM
Yeah, but we also said that about the US Movie Video store...
the Sawyer family @ Jun 10th 2009 2:14PM
MTV plays music videos?!
mossy @ Jun 10th 2009 4:18PM
MTV plays music!
ThermoPants @ Jun 10th 2009 1:55PM
Does this mean that VidZone will release over 3000 videos every week?!
10,000 videos / 3 weeks worth of content = 3333 videos
Jem @ Jun 10th 2009 2:02PM
To clarify, the "three weeks of content" means that if you were to listen to every song available at launch it would take you three weeks of solid listening.
Zoibie @ Jun 10th 2009 5:36PM
That's what I thought, but then I remembered that it's SCEE...
Carl @ Jun 10th 2009 5:51PM
I believe it means that if you were to press "START" and not prss "STOP" ntil every song had played, it would take roughly 3 whole weeks of non-stop playing.
Maybe i got the wrong end of the stick
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Jun 10th 2009 6:01PM
That's what they anounced before. Adding thousands of videos every week.
ryan_villa @ Jun 10th 2009 2:00PM
Cant wait for this when my m8s come over we allways listen to music on my PS3 now we can watch a load as well.
Echnaton @ Jun 10th 2009 5:12PM
It's a pitty it's not comming to switzerland ... at least Sony switzerland is unable to give any specific information ...
karlwulfekote @ Jun 10th 2009 3:00PM
Wait, why isn't this coming to the US exactly? I'm curious. I would be interested if it did.
Jon D @ Jun 10th 2009 3:34PM
while i must admit that we in the US get way more game content than our other PS3 gamers, alot of the other territories get way cooler stuff like this and PlayTV. I want a PlayTV. Hopefully the DTV changeover will change all of that and we'll see a release date for PlayTV, VidZone, and all the other multimedia offerings SCEA has been holding out on us.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 10th 2009 3:58PM
I'll try to get this tomorrow....if it works lol
Christian @ Jun 10th 2009 4:56PM
Whats that symbol on the XMB? in between network and game!?!??!
Also, i'm really looking forward to this, its awesome that EU are getting some great content
theakgod47 @ Jun 10th 2009 6:44PM
I dont kno why they always get the cool shit and we get nothing.
DKiller79 @ Jun 10th 2009 7:06PM
It's time to make a U.K account
alphaVI @ Jun 10th 2009 8:05PM
It's already dead. Sony can't release anything without a lump of downtime at the start.
Noisetank @ Jun 11th 2009 5:39AM
Yay! Finally us Brits get summin 1st! :P
Oh and PlayTV aint all that gr8...
GGCAN @ Jun 11th 2009 8:17AM
@Jerses I tried ovguide myself and live in Canada.
What happens when I try to view a show is that it tells me I'm in Canada and can't access the video.
I've got a feeling Vidzone is going to do this as well...hope not, but lately most sites are region blocking due to different countries laws.
I know I have a US account and it still won't let me download the US Movies from the PSN.
chrizs @ Jun 11th 2009 11:20AM
Well it's IP based can't get in.
ScavengeR_Ro @ Jun 11th 2009 3:04PM
The app is IP REGION locked!!! Trying an UK account and it does not work for me! (I live in ROMANIA)
