Get an 80GB PS3 for $349 on amazon.com
PRICE DROP?! Okay, not really. amazon.com is having a Gold Box deal today which drops the price of the standard 80GB PS3 down to $349 -- that's a savings of $50. We're certain most (if not all) of you already have a PS3, so this is where you'll have to evangelize a bit. Tell your friends why they should join the PlayStation Nation. Talk about the great games already out on the system: Uncharted, MGS4, Killzone 2, inFamous, etc. Then, do a Jack Tretton and talk about PS3's upcoming games: God of War, Final Fantasy XIV, Heavy Rain, etc.
Yeah, you'll become a salesperson, but think about this key benefit: the more people that actually own PS3s, the less stupid "PS3 has no games" comments you'll see online. And really, isn't that a "win" for everyone?
[Thanks, Kenny M.!]

Now that I have a real job and am no longer in school I can afford a PS3. The only thing holding me back though is how angry I am that they took away PS2 compatibility (and my job doesn't pay enough for me to get both a PS2 at the same time).
I have been waiting until I could get a PS3. I had just gotten MGS3 when my PS2 died.

Yeah...thats the reason I had to get mine from Gamestop so I could get one of the BC versions. Just an FYI tho, I find that the PS2 games look better on my PS2 then the PS3, so you may want to factor that in.
Mr. Joe @ Jun 11th 2009 10:18AM
oh even with this "price drop" i'm not buying until backwards compatibility is back!
just kidding.. i've already got a bc ps3. ha!
but if only i had some games to actually play on my big black beast..
just kidding! i've got plenty on the platter!

Lol?
Don't be mean to those poor unfortunate souls without a PS3..

Yo Guys, It's called Craigslist! I had a Wii and some guy (sucker) traded me for a 60GB PS3. If you're going to get a PS3, get the 60GB, it has the best feature set of all the PS3s (Hardware emulation of PS2 titles, Memory Card Reader, Wifi, 4 USB Ports, Silver Trim *lol*) And really, they're not that hard to find and get for cheap because the owners see them as "old" and we know better!. You'd be amazed what people are willing to trade out there, but just a word of advice: Bring a portable DVD Player with video In to test out any consoles you are going to be buying from people off the street! And Bring a friend! (Just to Be Safe)

Just to point out another little know fact about the PS3: The hard drive is not proprietary and can be easily (relatively) swapped with any 3.5" laptop HDD.
I changed my 60gb out for a 320gb, and I'm sure you can imagine the possibilities

Best Buy and Future Shop have been going back and forth selling the PS3 for $349 (Cdn!) over the last month or so. I figured it was a sign of a new SKU to be announced at E3, but obviously that didn't happen.
Amazon's move probably still means that Sony's probably trying to get rid of old stock before coming out with the 120GB Slim PS3.
Jaxy_Waxy @ Jun 11th 2009 11:03AM
I got a new 80GB PS3 from Dell for $320 just a few months ago. Just look out for those 20% coupon codes that Dell puts out there sometimes-- they don't just apply to computers.

eh. If my choice is between a used backwards compatible model or a new model that lacks important functionality, I'm out. I have a launch PS2-- I've gotten more use out of it than any other console, and that statement will probably apply for a very long time, if not the rest of my life. But the fact is, they break down. I don't want to buy another PS2, and I don't want to buy a PS3 that can't support its predecessor.
At the very least, they're going to have to release a slimmer and cheaper PS3 with a flat top to justify getting a slim PS2 when ol' funbox kicks the bucket. But frankly, I'm more inclined to just wait for manufacturing costs to go down until reimplementing BC is done, and enjoying lower prices on games once I get one. Plus, maybe they'll have a PS2 store by then, where I can buy Ico and all other sorts of PS2 games I missed. But for now, I've got a huge backlog anyway, and there are more Wii games I'd like to play, not to mention virtual console. I don't see myself running out of games to play within the next year at least.
That's not to say I don't want a PS3-- MGS4 is killing me, and there are more MGS games coming out. There are other games the Wii just doesn't have that I'd like to play. But none of them overcome the hardware-- as much as I'm dying to play MGS4, the hardware isn't good enough at this point to justify not just waiting 5-8 years and buying one for $50. The saddest part is that it wouldn't take any sweeping changes; just put PS2 compatibility back in and make a more attractive (smaller, flatter, no glossy plastic or chrome) case.
jahd5000 @ Jun 11th 2009 1:12PM
wait a minute, WHAT? MGS4 and all awesome games not justify, prefer waiting 8 years and bouy it for $50? what the hell are you talking about? are you immortal or what?
and ps3 ugly? come on everybody know and admits PS3 is sexy and better looking than any of the current generation consoles, and WAY MORE than old plastic squarish PS2. get real, no solid arguments on ya
Feba @ Jun 11th 2009 1:21PM
1- MGS4 justifies buying a PS3 eventually, but I'll get to play it whether I buy it now or in five years. And between the option of waiting for them to release better hardware or
2- Look at the price of last gen consoles and games. Anyone who held out with just a GameCube or Xbox is having a very very sweet time with the PS2 right about now.
3- I wouldn't say 8 years makes me immortal. I don't intend to die before 2020.
4- I personally find the PS3 ugly. Not as ugly as the Xbox, 360, Slim PS2, or GameCube, but certainly uglier than I think the Wii or PS2 are. Sometimes a nice simple box looks good. Even if it doesn't look as good, it's certainly more functional. I certainly am not a fan of the George Foreman with glossy (fingerprint magnet) plastic and chrome case. On top of that, the current PS3 case looks just plain bulky. Maybe not hueg leik xbawks, but it's up there. It looks just as bad to me as the batarang controller did.
You may not agree with me, but between the ugliness of the current case and the fact that there's no backwards compatibility, it's going to be a long time before I buy a PS3.
Jack Spicer PSN: watsuke @ Jun 11th 2009 5:54PM
It will all still be there, just like the people who waited for the PS3 price drop and still wanted PS2 BC.
Feba @ Jun 11th 2009 6:00PM
I don't see why you people are being so hostile. I'm not saying the PS3 is bad, it's probably the best piece of hardware on the market. I'm just saying that it doesn't do what I want it to, and I'd prefer to wait until it does rather than buy it twice.
And I highly doubt Sony is going to put out new PS3 units that can't play old games, especially blockbuster, system selling games. At worst, a game might go out of print, or be removed from the download store, but I don't see anything I must have as being at risk of having that happen.
The thing is, there isn't really anything that it would make sense to REMOVE from the PS3 at this point, but there are a few improvements they not only could make, but have very good reason to. I don't see anything I'm losing by not having a PS3 in the short term, and I see a lot of gains in waiting. Simple economic decision.
jahd5000 @ Jun 11th 2009 1:13PM
again with the coment system issues??
darklord mahler @ Jun 13th 2009 1:17PM
ps3 dosen't have enough exclusive games to warrant the price point, even at $350. I may want one, but i can not justify the cost for the sake of 3-4 games. i own a 360, and i would have to agree that the ps3 is a stronger console and the blue-ray thing is awsome (this is a better selling point), but the price is too high for a gaming console.

It looks like Amazon may have sold out? Current message on the Deal of the Day page for the PS3:
"We are currently in the process of obtaining product information for a new Deal Of The Day. Please check back soon!"
If you go to the product page for the 80GB PS3, it shows it as in-stock, but being delivered by Target! Interesting...
