Firmware 2.80 coming soon, does very little [update]

It's deja vu time. Another firmware update which seemingly does nothing. Firmware 2.80 has, according to PlayStation Network's Eric Lempel, a single feature. "The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved." Of course, it's bound to do something, so the first person to download and discover the trophy improvements / added video codec compatibilities / kitten spawner* wins a cookie. Should be out within the next 24 hours, if other releases are anything to go by.

[Update] Firmware 2.80 is now available. Notice anything different?

*Please note, 2.80 may very well not include any of these things. We just don't know.

Yo guys, this update majorly fixed the online stability. I usually get kicked off when playing Cross Edge or any time I am not actively doing something online. Since the update went live, I am yet to be kicked off or receive any kind of network error. :-)

What was it they threw in the last time suddenly? Some faster load times, a couple of fixed codecs for playback and something else.

I still think these smaller ones are preparing for something massive at 3.00 so they can have a smaller, faster update when the next "full" one comes along. Oh well, the damn system has so many features it's hard to keep track of as it is, so I don't care if I have to wait some more for them to announce what they are working on.

That makes no sense, since each update is a full firmware. The 3.0 update would, in fact, be bigger than these.

All I know is that they've hidden parts of updates coming later on in incremental PSP firmwares only to be found by hackers. I just thought it was a way of keeping the size of later updates smaller or smoother as far as installation goes.

You're right about the size being the same, so I guess I just decided to not pay attention for a day, but I don't see your point about 3.0 being bigger if they do sneak in something like they've done before.

In any case, you can correct me without being a dick about it - anonymity isn't an excuse for douche-baggery no matter what.

a way to avoid internet crash on the internet browser is to deny the 1st they ask if you want to run the plugin.

I dont know how tru this is but somone on the N4G forums says hes got viable info that firmware 3.0 brings private chat and cross game chat.

He also posted this a while a ago, and predicted 2.80 to be annouced.

just read the link you posted. Wow, either that guy really does work 'inside' or he came across the info somehow and is acting like he works from the inside.

either way, if this guy is legit, I *can't wait* for FW3.0. I can finally stop hearing the whining from the PS Blog commenters.

Sadly, I'm sure they'll find something else to whine about.

Hedgeson, the problem doesn't persist throughout the game. One of the bosses has RIDICULOUS slowdown though, half speed or less.

I have to agree with Confucius here. Constant, little updates would be fine if getting them wasn't compulsory to go online and/or you didn't have to download them with every other update there has been. Think about those on crappy connections like me, although my connection speed isn't that uncommon here in the UK, not for a rural area anyway (I get ~1mbps)

I'm pretty sure that this update is to make your PS3 XMB font colour lighter to be more compatible with the internet tubes. Right now the PS3 only can handle the green internet tubes, but with this upgrade, you can use the blue tubes. Blue tubes are faster!
