Yoichi Wada suggests The Last Remnant may never make it to PS3

We hope you're not holding your breath for a PS3 release of The Last Remnant, Square Enix's uneven attempt at creating a game using Unreal Engine 3. The company's CEO, Yoichi Wada, made some choice comments during a recent shareholder meeting which lead us to believe it may never make it out on Sony's system. AndriaSang.com has summarized his comments, in which he states that "it's tough on the development side of things to say that you'll release a game on multiple platforms but end up not doing so, Square Enix has to think about profitability."
"If there's a gap in the release of multiple versions of a game, and if the first version didn't necessarily see such great success, they have to think that there won't be a change in performance on a new platform." No games in particular were mentioned, but only one really fits the bill. The Last Remnant was announced as a multiplatform title, saw low sales on the Xbox 360 in November 2008, and there's been no sign of a PS3 release since then. In the interest of "profitability" this game may simply be put to pasture, instead.

It Didnt sell well cause it was a subpar game AND it didnt come out on the PS3 in Japan. At the very LEAST they should have released it there on the PS3
Copland @ Jun 24th 2009 4:31PM
I agree.
But last year, if you look at how Square Enix was doing business,
their main target was other countries then Japan.
Thats why their priority was to release games on the XBox360.
(Like Star Ocean 4. And also release Last Remnant first on the 360.)
But it didn't go well.
They should of made PS3 their priority, because it has a more big install base in Japan and their games are more bought in Japan also.(If you look at Star Ocean4 or Bandai-Namco's Tales of Vesperia.)
But I think the Final Fantasy series are an exception,
cause game archive Final Fantasy VII seems to be doing good in sales.
saito ps3 @ Jun 24th 2009 4:09PM
dunno why they decided to even release it on the xbox 360 considering most ps3 fans are rpg fans. i would think square enix would realize how bad their games do on xbox 360, with infinite undiscovery doing bad, star ocean 4, last remnant all not doing as good as they might have done on ps3.
dgknight500 @ Jun 24th 2009 10:06PM
sadly, sound logic is useless to M$' bags of cash...
Mazrael @ Jun 24th 2009 11:04PM
Of all the RPG's the 360 got. Lot Odyssey is the only one that really stands out, although yet to even start Star Ocean..
Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery & Star Ocean 4 are in-part developed by Feelplus, who are part of MS
Last Remnant.. your not missing much, SE had enough problems with the U3 engine, it runs badly enough on 360 - It might of sold more, being multiformat, doesn't stop it being 'marmite'..
But, with PS3 getting all 360's old RPGs, it's like the 360 owners funded the extra development.. like Enchanted Arms, Vesperia, Eternaly (dull) Sonata.. RPG's nowadays need a bit more spice..
doctorwho94 @ Jun 24th 2009 4:17PM
Aw, i was looking forward to his game. oh well.

Michael @ Jun 24th 2009 4:22PM
The worst part is is Square Enix keeps rolling out these sub-par RPGs and then goes on to say how much easier it is to develop on 360. It's always easier to do something when you half ass it. Just don't expect people to buy it.
Heavytoka @ Jun 24th 2009 4:22PM
I wasn't a fan of the combat system, it just felt off to me.
R5 @ Jun 24th 2009 4:28PM
What sort of irks me, is that why doesn't S-E just come out and say the PS3 version of TLR is canceled? Why keep beating around the bush?
OLDMIKE @ Jun 24th 2009 6:31PM
well if you dont do it IN it you dont need to worry about kids
Susumu @ Jun 24th 2009 5:12PM
So what the hell were they doing all this time?
Goddammit I really wanted this game. I don't have the money for a new PC or 360.
vahdyx @ Jun 24th 2009 4:39PM
This upsets me. I'm getting really tired of hearing about PS3 doesn't get this, dropped support this, lower prices or no GH or T.Hawk, 56% of reso, update after update, installing that, yadda yadda. It's really making me lose my moral for the system.
I really love my PS3, but the more and more I read about Xbox 360 getting the benefit no matter the situation no matter how small, it still adds to my paranoia and discontent for my system.
I'd never do something stupid like trade it in for a 360, but this is seriously taxing on my confidence as a PS3 owner.
Well, I'll go home and play it and forget all my woes, but the more and more I hear the harder it is to believe the PS3 is gonna survive this gen.
OLDMIKE @ Jun 24th 2009 6:36PM
you know what go take a look at what games that are comeing out or are out
most of my games are from SONY 9 of the 21 that i have
as for the GH 20 or whatnot i dont care rockband is better

Meh, the way I see it Xbox gets some games first but a lot are later released in an enhanced version for the PS3 or if it was a crap game gets phased out. Xbox is like the beta testing for the game before it comes out on a REAL system ^ . ^
Alistair Azimuth PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Jun 24th 2009 10:42PM
Just have some patience vahdyx. I'm playing import versions of White Knight Chronicles and Demon Souls and they blow all this half assed effort from SE out of the water. All in due time.
codeGen @ Jun 25th 2009 10:21AM
You should stop reading propaganda. PS3 have lot of good exclusive games. I play this on my 360 and it was far from a good experience. by the way I never complete the game. It was a bad game so stop crying for 1 stupid game. And go play infamous.
Danny @ Jun 24th 2009 4:41PM
I would've bought this whilst i waited for final fantasy XIII, i hadn't realised they were thinking of making it multi platform.
It's unlikely they wouldn't have made a profit right?
I wouldn't have minded playing infinite undiscovery either, but thats exclusive.
Draco @ Jun 24th 2009 10:37PM
I'm playing it right now, I got to disk 2 after about 6 hours (i'm not complaining about changing disks) it seems to me like there are very few ennemies, I think of the first 6 or 7 bosses (whatever amount you fight in the first half) a full half were the exact same ogre with different stats and different colour. then you fight that same ogre on disk 2 as a regular monster. I don't know how different the different humans are, but I would be suprised if someone told me there were more then 10 different enemies in the entire game.
not sure if thats a storage problem, but it appears that way to me... very disappointing.
jojo @ Jun 24th 2009 4:51PM
i find the irony for S-E quite humorous.
Hey, lets release a Japanese themed-game in Japan for the 360, the lowest selling console there....
Riiight....well, look how that turned out?
Haven't they learned from other titles like
Lost Odyssey...
Or Blue Dragon...
two heavy hitters, didn't manage much there...
Guess that is what S-E, for taking MS dirty money...
Jling84 @ Jun 24th 2009 6:49PM
Totally agree. Either SE will figure it out and start releasing JRPGs on PS3 as the lead SKU or they will just keep hemorrhaging money. There's a reason why news stories abound about SE losing market and profits. More so than both the Wii and the 360, the PS3 is THE system for JRPG fans. SE would do well to realize that.
pspfanboi @ Jun 24th 2009 4:52PM
Well....if SE had half a brain they would wake up and smell the coffee and see that the PS3 is a hardcore RPG MACHINE... WTF are they thinking with the xbox360?
i mean cmon, the only ppl that play that are all halo fanbois and fps phaggots.
The PS3 has a larger RPG crowd due to the FF series and such. Yet some great games( last remnant, star ocean, etc) have died a crapsuffocating death due to the 360.
there i said it....i said what u all were thinking and know to be the truth and nothing but the truth so help me jack james.

Considering their games took off in america on what system? Yea, they should give it a shot.
NwrksBigBoss @ Jun 24th 2009 5:10PM
f*ck Square Enix. So far there is no support from them on the PS3. And rpg's are a genre that is severely lacking on it.
RagingStormX @ Jun 24th 2009 8:12PM
Well $E can't be blamed for Start Ocean 4 or Infinite Undiscovery being only on the 360 as they are only the publishers for those RPGs (Tri-Ace Developed them). But I am sure as hell piss with them over Last Remnant....all they have to do is fix the glitches and framrate issues from the 360/PC version, add trophies and release it worldwide for the PS3 and it will sell. $E is just too cheap and lazy for such a well established third party developer. Using a middle ware engine....nope that will not do, you are a big company..act like it. They should have a killer inhouse engine by now made from scratch....They better pray the FF series doesn't fall off, cause of now thats all they've got going for them.
Jack Spicer PSN: watsuke @ Jun 25th 2009 4:04AM
Could of released it sooner to not have to add trophies, make it a little easier for them. Oh well.
saito ps3 @ Jun 24th 2009 5:45PM
another thing, i really cant wait till white knight chronicles comes out. then it will show square dumb enix just how great the rpg base is on ps3 and how starved we are. demons soul too is gonna be another great rpg game!
michael000 @ Jun 24th 2009 5:55PM
Good call on a JRPG being a 360 exclusive, hope that moneyhat covered all the dev costs.
Hilarious that Squeenix is an absolute non player when it comes to the next gen consoles. Oh well, let them stick to their usual milking of remakes and other DS crap they're clearly not interested in anything but milking the easy sh!t to make money anymore. Not that there's anything wrong with that but you get 0 respect for that from any real gamer. How the mighty have fallen
muir666 @ Jun 24th 2009 6:14PM
W8 didn't they release a new trailer for this at E3. why would they pull it after making that.unless they've had it sitting in a dark corner since november.i really wanted this aswell. I hope Sacred 2 satisfies the urge when i get that on Friday. then the wait is on for FF XIII and Dragon Age: Origins

there was some other problem I cant *loading* quite remember either.

Funniest comment I've read on Joystiq in a little while. Friggin' lovely.
Mazrael @ Jun 24th 2009 11:08PM
Yea.. framerate was terrible.. you need a newest Jasper & installed for it to run at what looks like 40 frames, still gets the Unreal texture pop in places though.. SE's first try at the U3 engine, and they didn't quite get it.. hopefully on their next attempts with U3, they'll use the upto date 'stable' versions...
Oz @ Jun 24th 2009 7:49PM

Wada is a steaming pile of excrement. I hate that no good idiot. They should release TLR just to save face at this point. They have alienated their fanbase and continuously make poor business decisions. I'm almost convinced that he is purposely trying to run SE into the ground. Seriously, what company turns their back on existing customers because there is a POSSIBILITY of more customers elsewhere. The "larger userbase" excuse for bailing on your customers has fallen through Wada, so now what are you gonna do? Keep your back turned? Idiot.
Chenchi @ Jun 24th 2009 8:19PM
This game would have been great but the eagles nest.... If I knew they fixed that in the ps3 version I would definitely get it as other then that it seemed pretty good.
Carlos @ Jun 24th 2009 8:38PM
Yoichi is lame. it's better this way. i heard it was a bad game anyways, and who would want a port of that.
Nobledevil @ Jun 24th 2009 10:43PM
Well, I can still play it on the 360 with the new-ish install feature, which I hear gets rid of a lot of the issues the game had to begin with.
Also, I can buy it on my PC, which will get damn close to 360 graphics but make up for it in pure performance.
Sangor @ Jun 25th 2009 5:29AM
The pc version has none of the problems that plague the xbox360.
As for the "graphics getting damn close to the 360", if you have a fairly good system they easily outshine the console version.
PLD_Exander_FFXI:Online @ Jun 25th 2009 3:13PM
Meh, PS3 users arnt really loosing anything. On PC, the game looked halfway decent but other than that, the game was very Sub-Par and at times felt rushed. I dont know why SE didn't use the Crystal Tools Engine to make TLR. Seems kinda funny to use Unreal Engine for it...
Oh well. Were not missing anything.
Emophia @ Jun 25th 2009 8:59AM
After playing the Demo on steam (with my 360 controller since it doesnt have any mouse support at all), I dont really care.
It was so bad... So bad...
Vagrant Winds @ Jun 25th 2009 4:48PM
The sad part is that most of the bad reviews of the game are based on the 360 version.
The PC, director's cut, version is an exponentially better game in all aspects gameplay.
