Rumor: PS3 firmware 3.0 'a completely new system' [Update: Sony responds!]
[Update: Unsurprisingly, Sony has squashed these rumors flat. PlayStation's Patrick Seybold told us, "Those rumors are completely untrue, nothing has been announced or confirmed for upcoming PlayStation firmware, and this is just wild speculation." Well, we don't know about wild ... you haven't heard our speculation about your existing PS3 transforming into a PS3 Slim after applying the 3.0 firmware. It's true!]
Sure, PS3 Firmware 2.80 didn't do much – what did it do again? – but if a new rumor out of VG247 is to be believed, Firmware 3.0 will deliver "a completely new system" to the PS3 and it'll do it by Christmas. So, let's run down this list, shall we? This "huge overhaul" will include "a reputation system," a "grief reporting system," support for background patch downloading, and "simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting" (we're assuming this means simultaneous HDMI audio and optical audio output ... though we're not sure who that would be useful to).
That's it? That doesn't sound like a "completely new system" to us. VG247 says they've been told more, but we'll "just have to wait" before they share that info – uh, thanks? So, does that list check off any of your must have features? We know, we know ... voice chat is still missing, so other than that?

" support for background patch downloading "
PLEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEEEEE let this be true
maroofh @ Jun 26th 2009 11:25AM
i would like simultaneous hdmi and optical audio, so i can choose to get audio from the tv or the home theatre system
BlingOnMyWrist @ Jun 26th 2009 12:01PM
does that mean that we get the sound from the sony wires that are included with the ps3 and the video from the HDMI? because we can already do that...
seamonkey420 @ Jun 26th 2009 12:03PM
me too! i've been wanting this from day1 :)
maroofh @ Jun 26th 2009 12:06PM
I think it means you can get audio outputed from hdmi and optical at the same time. At the moment you can only choose one or the other in the audio settings.
Rygar @ Jun 26th 2009 12:16PM
Also good for when you need to switch to headphones at bedtime ;)
TypeF @ Jun 26th 2009 12:19PM
to be honest i don't really care about the HDMI most of the core players want cross game voice chat or multiple private chat like the xbox live....unless they don't implement that players will still not be satisfied. ps3 needs to catch up to live really can't wait for this to happen :( please implement private/cross multiple client voice chat!!!!!!
TypeF @ Jun 26th 2009 12:21PM
oh did i mention in game browser man....that will so own if it had that too, but most important is voice chat!
Eric E @ Jun 26th 2009 12:49PM
F*CK this comment system. I typed out a long explanation of why i would love optical/HDMI simultaneous output.
20 min later no email and now its lost, but i got other emails from other comments i left after.
Ashitaka @ Jun 26th 2009 1:15PM

You can always use the 'Previous' function in your browser to look at what you wrote. That's what I do when Joystiq's comment system refuses to accept my comments: I just go back and post it again until it's accepted.
Eric E @ Jun 26th 2009 3:03PM
@Ashitaka
Thanks, i try too, unless its too late which of course it was. ( i closed it cause im at work)
Jack_Jackington @ Jun 26th 2009 11:26AM
croos game voice chat, better party system, etc
we've heard it all before. show us PROOF
Olivier @ Jun 26th 2009 11:29AM
D-box system takes its input from the optical out.
Simultaneous output would allow someone to feed its D-box while sending HD audio output through HDMI to the audio receiver...

Backround patch downloads are a pretty big deal to me. Wanting to play a game and having to wait is no fun.
Vigling37 @ Jun 26th 2009 11:34AM
*A browser that actually lets me read my Yahoo email, works well on Playstation forums, and gives better visuals on HULU etc...you know, like Firefox.
*A better deal on the PSN Video store, something like a Netflix monthly membership that gives so many movies a month etc
*Some sought of real chat program, oh like maybe Skype for the Ps3 since PSP has it
*Improvements to Friends List, especially on Warhawk[50 friends limit sucks]
...hmmm let me get back to this after l read the 200 request for Cross Game Chat.
ps3gamer @ Jun 26th 2009 11:35AM
All this will do is make ppl report you for no reason.
Jerses @ Jun 26th 2009 11:43AM
Yeah, you can get banned like in xbox live for just having too much archivements.... its time for me to delete friends and play less online.
Maybe that multiple outputs....means ps3 slim!? Nah, maybe they will sell this as an addon.
Also it doesnt sound like it should be 3.00, maybe 2.88.
Copland @ Jun 26th 2009 12:54PM
I agree.
What if they get pi**ed off when playing an online game together.
They might just report you for giving them a headshot....
Walo @ Jun 27th 2009 4:26PM
It doesn't work like that. Nobody can ban users without proof. A report means that the situation will be investigated and if proof is found then the player will be banned, Even if you are reported without cause you will not even notice that there was an investigation on you, as the situation will be investigated on the background. If DEFINITIVE proof is found then you will be notified of it and your account will be banned.
Finally COD4 modded controller users will be banned "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" */end of evil laugh...
wes @ Jun 26th 2009 11:36AM
"...(we're assuming this means simultaneous HDMI audio and optical audio output ... though we're not sure who that would be useful to).."
Me. It would be useful to me.
Viglin @ Jun 26th 2009 11:36AM
*Better browser
*Sometime of real chat program, like Skype for Ps3
*Improvements to friends list[50 friends limit on Warhawk sucks]
...ll get back to you after the 3000 request for Cross game chat.
Otsego_Undead @ Jun 26th 2009 11:40AM
oh yes, PLEASE, just give us a webkit browser. the ps3 browser, while better than NO browser, sucks. Hard.
Jimmy @ Jun 26th 2009 2:58PM
Yes, need a better browser. Anything else!
Mein Bratwurst @ Jun 26th 2009 4:21PM
Viglin, wasn't the friends cap raised to 100 a few months ago?
Shammy @ Jun 26th 2009 11:37AM
Wow, you seem completely out of touch with the news you're reporting Mr. Editor-in-Chief.
Let's go over it again:
-By reputation system I assume they plan to fix the problems people are having with trophies.
- A grief reporting system does nothing but report bugs so they can be fixed promptly... they have been doing a bad job about that as well.
-Supporting background patch downloading also helps. It's annoying to sit and wait before being able to play a game. Go and play another one while you wait sound much more reasonable.
-Simultaneous HDMI and digital optical output means that you can connect it to two screens. That doesn't mean that some games will support it for co-op, but for the ones that do or will it's good news.
Sorry to seem condescending, but this are actual problems that are being fixed for people who use their PS3. I'm personally happy about that...And I assume you don't even have yours at home.
Freddy Torres @ Jun 26th 2009 11:38AM
Bitstream output of Dolby True HD and DTS-HD.
S4Rs @ Jun 26th 2009 12:58PM
Its already been proven that the Hardware cant support it unfortunately. I would buy a new PS3 if they added the hardware for it.
I would like to see MKV support (a Divx upgrade would do this now), and the ability to play music from the XMB in any game (using network streams).
sc00by_y00 @ Jun 26th 2009 2:28PM
S4rs, explain this then:
the PlayStation 3 console has the ability to decode DTS-HD Master Audio or High Resolution since the newest firmware update, ver. 2.30 and up. (wikipedia)
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9916002-1.html
http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/patterson/16712
You were saying ? That was with the 2.30 update..
Torgo @ Jun 26th 2009 11:39AM
I thought that the reason they don't allow simultaneous HDMI and optical audio was for HDCP and Copyright issues. I doubt they'd add that feature now, since that still seems to be an issue.
Blite @ Jun 26th 2009 2:06PM
No - that's not the issue here. Dual HDMI and optical audio out is required for many people using the system in a home theater setting. Otherwise, the audio must be passed through the TV, which greatly limits your output options (if the TV supports it at all).
Most standalone blu-ray players support this.
Otsego_Undead @ Jun 26th 2009 11:39AM
Personally, I'd like to be able to send a message to a buddy via the web. It would be nice to have a completely revamped "social networking-esque" portion to replace the buddies or something of that sort. Let us share more, upload pictures, post messages to friends profiles, display our trophies and stats on our recently played games, or even a complete game history.
I can help you out with that Sony, drop me a line, yeah?
Catdogburger @ Jun 26th 2009 3:09PM
There is a thing called Facebook....have you heard of it?
Jon Acheson @ Jun 26th 2009 11:51AM
Hopefully they will be adding the Punch, Kick and Block buttons to Home.
Jack_Jackington @ Jun 26th 2009 12:49PM
I would love to fight a stranger in Home. that would so fun
Ashitaka @ Jun 26th 2009 1:26PM
I talked about that the other day while playing poker at the EA Sports Complex! I beat the table, but there was this guy there that kept going all-in. It pissed me off so much that he made me wish that there were a punch and kick buttons so I could whoop his ass (and I actually wrote that xD).

Also, Jump, Crouch/Roll, and Climb. Let's get some virtual parkour going.
But definitely Punch.
Plankfan @ Jun 26th 2009 11:53AM
They should add an option that allows you to barrel roll!
Kyle @ Jun 26th 2009 11:54AM
Some sort of software-based emulation for backwards compatibility....maybe...hopefully....

hmmmmm
all I care for is auto updating for trophies, a universal party system (OUTSIDE OF HOME!!), Auto installing for games(like on 360 they install as they download I suppose) universal game invites would be nice too
Jerses @ Jun 26th 2009 11:59AM
Last update was about trophies, they run faster even in-game and they autoupdate you should check it out. Now its really usefull will reviewing trophies while playing.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 26th 2009 1:31PM
trophies already auto update now??? I dunno cause I havent gotten one since the update has came out
PS3Homie @ Jun 26th 2009 11:58AM
I still want everything that was included in that rumored 2.7 update.
Friends List:
* Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
* Home Integration: Saved Playstation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
* Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.
Gamer Card & Trophies:
* Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
* Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
* Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
* Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.
In-Game XMB:
* Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seemless in-game experience.
* "Theme settings" options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
* Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
* Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
* Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.
Misc:
* Other slight UI tweaks and enhancements.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 26th 2009 12:13PM
That rumoured update sounded so awsome, would have been nice, especialy new profiles cause our ones are too bland. Plus showing Gamer level besides your name on the XMB
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 26th 2009 12:07PM
good luck with that
Eric E @ Jun 26th 2009 12:39PM
How about a trophy Patch to aquatopia!
But seriously, they should add custom soundtrack to that cause i'd love to use it as a visualizer/screen saver.
Nick @ Jun 26th 2009 11:58AM
Grief reporting is nice but it can be abused too easily.
If it's going to be "a whole new system" maybe that PS Cloud thing will make an appearance. Maybe the entire XMB will be overhauled, which could be a shame because I really like the XMB as it is.
snordr8 @ Jun 26th 2009 11:58AM
software-based emulation for backwards compatibility with ps2 games...possibly...maybe...
Jack Spicer PSN: watsuke @ Jun 26th 2009 11:59AM
Sounds like the PS3 update section on the PS forums. Its a rumor and nothing more then false. Sony has never leaked FW update info, especially this far ahead. They onlly announce the day before the FW is released.
Now im assuming people are going to start posting what they want in the update then post they are pissed at sony when its not in the update. You wouldnt be dissapointed if you didnt think these RUMORS were true. You know, deep down, you start to really believe it will have cross game voice chat.
Edmeist @ Jun 26th 2009 11:59AM
Cross Game chat or fail. IMO. But whatever, as long as the 1st party games continue to kick ass, that's all that matters.
