Analysts: Blu-ray to capture 50% of software market by 2012
According to consulting firm Futuresource (via Video Business), Blu-ray discs will account for 50 percent of the home entertainment market by 2012. That said, the firm lowered its expectations of Blu-ray sales for 2009 from 90 million to 75 million thanks to software attach rates on the PS3. It seems that PS3 owners tend to buy only one or two Blu-ray movies a year, while owners of dedicated Blu-ray players buy anywhere from five to eight.
Furthermore, while the PS3 is currently the most popular Blu-ray player -- it accounts for 6 percent of high-def hardware, while dedicated players make up only 3 percent -- Futuresource expects the console will account for only 22 percent of all high definition equipment in 2012. Declining prices for dedicated machines -- the firm says that entry level players will cost $50 by 2012 -- will push them to 53 percent.
Assuming these numbers ring true, maybe we'll be paying a little less for the "one to two" Blu-ray movies we supposedly buy every year.

seems a little off to me, I mean sure I have damn near 100+ Blu-ray movies, but I'm the exception. For it to be 50% that meant the prices are going to have to match DVDs for moth players AND software, as well as Writers and writable disc. WE'll have to wait and see but I dont see it happening that soon.

Wow, it seems you mustn't have anything better to spend your cash on...
At what price do you buy your blu-ray movies?

well I collect movies....have over 1,300+ DVDs so it was no stretch for me to start gettin BD movies....and I dont pay anymore than $25 for them...the most expensive SINGLE Disc BD Movie I bought was like $26...racked up on a LOT at Circuity City before they closed

Well, I too collect movies (although I *only* have about 700). But the thing is, I have this policy of not buying movies for a price above 10€, so that's why I only have three blu-ray movies so far. Here in Portugal blu-ray movies usually cost 30€ or more (and blu-ray tv shows about 70€).. Good for you that you can buy so many movies at such a low price :]
So, hum, sorry for that first remark.

You might want to call an exterminator.

DVD player prices fell at pretty much the same rate. It really depends on HDTV adoption. The higher % of HDTV's in homes, the more people will begin to go Blu-Ray.

I bought my 2 of the year already, it was Wall-e and The Dark Knight!
I think the next one will be Ghostbusters

I'm with Chris D. I'm a PS3 owner and 1-2 a year is way off for me and my friends. I bought 3 last week, and probably 15-20 since the start of 09.
Most of my PS3 owning friends bought it for BD first, and the games came later. I guess we are the minority.
Innocent Bystander @ Jun 30th 2009 7:26AM
Ummm... it's 12 for me... in the last 4 weeks alone... there sure are a lot of exceptions on this site haha :o).
I find the attach rate surprising when I consider that the PS3 is pretty much the best Blu-Ray player in its price category and does a hell of a job upconverting DVD's (does it well enough that sitting back from my 46" TV about 13' I can hardly tell the quality difference between the two formats).

I own about 20-25. I bought most of them off of Amazon or when Circuit City was going out of business. They're too expensive to buy regular.
dalejrfanfreak @ Jun 29th 2009 9:05PM
Sooooo I own a PS3 and 45 Blu Ray movies. HA, take that attach rate!
ryanpaulmcgowan @ Jun 29th 2009 9:53PM
"...it (PS3) accounts for 6 percent of high-def hardware, while dedicated players make up only 3 percent"
What? What other type of high-def hardware is there? That doesn't even make sense. Are you including T.V.'s in that?
ryanpaulmcgowan @ Jun 29th 2009 9:56PM
After reading the article you got it from, I see your mistake.
It's not 3% OF high-def hardware. It's saying 3% of hardware is high-def.
There is a difference =\.

I have a ps3 and a couple of blu-ray films. I know I have the set up and all, but honestly, there is no reason to pay $30 to see "He's Just Not That Into" in HD. That's ludicrous.
Working in the movie retail business, I have noticed that a lot of older people get suckered into blu-ray and start buying films that really have no reason to be on blu-ray.
Honestly, it's the films that are actually shot in HD and are high action - cgi that are worth it. It's silly to put out these older films or romantic comedy bullshit and expect people to shell out full price + $10 or so dollars (blu-ray) over a regular old, dvd.
