Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny character creation is for the detail-obsessed

When Soul Calibur III released on the PS2, its character creation mode added unprecedented depth to the series -- and subtracted most of our free time. It's fitting, then, that in keeping with its concept of being totally awesome, the series' first outing on PSP, Broken Destiny, would up the ante.
Its create-a-character goes beyond anything we've seen in a fighter on any platform. New options allow for precision-tuning of every aspect of a created combatant's appearance, including the size, position and angle of their various accessories. In one of the example screens released by Namco, a character's glasses go from resting on the tip of his nose to propped up on his brow (and presumably could be placed anywhere in-between). That clown in the above image? It's totally adjustable, in addition to being really effing freaky.

Perhaps the coolest option is the ability to create character portrait thumbnails that'll appear on the fighter selection screen. No more generic silhouettes or question marks. (Which makes us wonder: Will we be able to create a character that looks like a silhouette, or even a question mark?)

As detail obsessed for their game character person I am, Im very happy and glad for this
Kdiggy @ Jul 17th 2009 8:05PM
As long as the breast physics are as good as the last few games in the series, I'm there.
Character creation is a must. I pretty much only used my custom's online in SC 4.
Turtlebelly @ Jul 17th 2009 8:08PM
Sweet!
I adored character customization in 3/4. the fact this one takes it further by adding the custom thumbnails is a pretty swank little detail too.
Jacksons @ Jul 17th 2009 8:12PM
I'm starting to think this will be superior to SC IV.

It doesn't have that turtle Apprentice in Arcade mode. It already wins. :P
Tyler @ Jul 17th 2009 9:31PM
@roto13
God I HATED Apprentice! Stupid jerk... I usually ended up spamming BB as Night or Sieg. I also spammed Rook Splitters... I hate hate hate the apprentice....
Roto13 @ Jul 17th 2009 10:17PM
And you know, the problem with the Apprentice wasn't even his moveset or anything. It was the AI. So annoying.
Jacksons @ Jul 18th 2009 7:22PM
Haha, I knew I couldn't be the only one hating that asshole. I got so irritated with arcade Apprentice that I now immediately go to the edge and go for the ring out. Works every time.
PSN: Erdie (Now equipped with Wii!) @ Jul 18th 2009 7:23PM
Go for the ring out. A lot less headaches that way.
Zixaphir @ Jul 17th 2009 10:35PM
Yeah, never seen as much customization outside of the genre of 3D hentai games. Seriously, if those guys dedicated all their time to actually making games and not character creators, we'd probably have some "Adult Only" games that were, y'know, actually fun.

As long as they drop the stupid "stats" system they attached to all the pieces of items you could get, I'll be happy. I hated how some characters I really liked the look of had to be gimped stat-wise, was just plain stupid.
xoonaka @ Jul 19th 2009 10:30AM
While I kind of agree with you, in some ways I'm thankful for the way they set it up. It made it a lot more interesting to design out characters for me. I used some ugly pieces and had to figure out how to make it look better using the color sliders and other various options. I think it really broadened my horizons on the equipment available overall.
Maybe if they rip away the stats thing and figure out some other way to encourage people to try out a ton of different equipment set ups they might otherwise consider ugly, then we could both be happy here.

I love SoulCalibur, and I rather enjoy my PSP. This is a must get for rme.
UnclGhost @ Jul 18th 2009 2:13PM
I hope it allows you to make characters look as ridiculous as in Tekken 5 for PSP.
cylet @ Jul 18th 2009 7:19PM
will we get custom fighting styles or more shadows of other characters styles? i liked how in SC3 custom characters could acquire souls and have their own disciplines.
tobz1000 @ Jul 18th 2009 8:28PM
Yeah. Many of my favourite styles were the custom ones, plus they effectively doubled the character roster. Although balance went out the window and to Mexico.
ABC123 @ Jul 19th 2009 3:09AM
I hope this game is good. I hated Soul Calibur 4
Manji Ninja @ Jul 20th 2009 4:07PM
@ABC123 if you didn't like Soul Calibur 4 i doubt this'll change your mind. It is my fave fighter though, so i'm looking forward to having SC on the go. It did strike me as odd that SC4 has a slimmed down roster of customisable players after SC3 added new styles. I've made some awesome ones too, but the main cast are of course still the best.
