Sony's earliest Motion Controller plans included Teletubbies, X-Men

Some of the prototypes developed by the EyeToy team include "Misho the Witch" (pictured above), a virtual pet simulation that has players using a ball-and-stick controller to play with the on-screen witch. Ideas from this demo have ended up in both EyePet and the upcoming Motion Controller itself. Other ideas thrown around included a magic duel, where players could write spells using gestures, and games inspired by Casper the Friendly Ghost and the Teletubbies.
While gamers have been spared from a motion-sensing game based on the Teletubbies, another idea seems to have been left on the wayside: games based on various superhero properties. Marks' presentation revealed plans to recreate the powers of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men through the PlayStation camera. We're not sure how far those ideas went, but a superhero game that takes advantage of the Motion Controller would make perfect sense as a launch game for when the controller (finally) debuts next year.

And yet Sony will always be thought off as "ripping off teh Wii."
Pat @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:23PM
You said it. Many people also forget that both the Sixaxis and Wiimote were introduced the same day at E3 2006.
CubeGuy @ Aug 3rd 2009 4:54PM
I coulb be wrong, but I seem to remember the Wiimote being shown off sans-speaker a couple months prior at a Nintendo press briefing. The version with the speaker was the one shown off at E3.

people fail to realize this....at any rate I'm glad they DIDNT get it out then if they planned to use it on the Teletubbies....b
I SAID @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:21PM
teletubbies vs x-men. sounds great. when's it come out?
Andrew Yoon @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:22PM
I'm going to be passing this on to Sony. Make sure they work on this ASAP.
Samantha (PSN: Starlighthed211) @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:11PM
I lol'd on that. XD
brad450 @ Aug 3rd 2009 8:03PM
thanks for actually writing this up andrew. my adventure to find more R&D slides has begun!!!!!!
McWilly @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:31PM
Saaay eh oh!
crazypenguin @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:34PM
i like the new wand and everything, but i'm not sure i trust the actual playstation eye, since i don't think its the best quality i want for a game... but of course nobody wants to have the hardware changed because that screws over the people who originally bought it. eh, we'll see what happens.
Paul @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:54PM
there are a few funny teletubbie levels on LBP. different ways to kill the teletubbies
Firewarrior @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:55PM
I understand Sony isn't new to the motion genre, and is obviously influenced by Nintendo's success, but I just feel Sony are trying hard.
CzAr @ Aug 3rd 2009 8:13PM
Maybe them trying hard is better than just getting off easy like Nintendo did... and then releasing Motion Plus after the thought.
Josh @ Aug 3rd 2009 12:56PM
Is it *really* going to have those giant orbs on top, though?
I know this is a prototype of a prototype, but still...
Pat @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:23PM
The spheres on the prototypes at this year's E3 were already a bit smaller. Since the surface is self illuminating it would be possible to reduce them a bit more still. But of course balancing the PSEye's resolution with a larger size tracking marker makes the track more accurate. We'll have to wait.
Chromekreeper @ Aug 3rd 2009 1:01PM
if they actually make more games then they did with the ps3's eyetoy, ill be interested in buying it.
BTW would a web cam be good enough to use this?
Pat @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:23PM
You can use any camera for web conferencing with the PS3, but PSEye games will only work with that particular hardware.
Chromekreeper @ Aug 4th 2009 12:48AM
hopefully they bundle this with an eyetoy then or ill probably not buy it then :-/
rollntider @ Aug 3rd 2009 1:24PM
just as long as they don't do away with the hard core games, all of the hardcore games sell like crap on the wii.
Paul @ Aug 3rd 2009 1:46PM
I gotta wonder are people going to go out and buy this and natal? I mean all the casual gamers already have a Wii that is collecting dust.
DarklighterPS3 @ Aug 3rd 2009 2:48PM
A superhero game seems like it would be a good way to bridge the hardcore-casual gap. When I consider how even my non gamer friends do occasionally like to play their favorite comic book characters in marvel ultimate alliance this seems all the more reasonable. Then I remember Marvel Ultimate Alliance on the Nintendo Revolution and how the motion controls made it unplayable garbage. No I will not be buying this controller. If I wanted to use motion controls I would have just kept my nintendo revolution
rhbarrett4 @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:00PM
Technicall Nintendo ripped off sony because the eyetoy was out for playstation 2 before the wii and granted nintendo made it much better but sony made it first.
brad450 @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:15PM
thanks andrew for taking my tip and actually taking the time to write this
Jason B. @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:17PM
Looks like a candy apple.
j.howlett @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:30PM
i remember what reviewers said about sony's early attempts for motion control. i want to see how they do now.
Pat @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:32PM
Glad to see Joystick finally catching up. I have been posting links to 2003- 2004 videos from Marks showing Eyetoy R&D since mid June.
If you are curious here are some of them:
Showing Eyetoy head tracking:

Showing what would eventually turn into the PS Motion Control and EyePetshown at this year's E3:

Finally the research on control-less z- depth tracking. Watch at around 7:28 to see where MS probably got the idea for the demo they showed at E3

rells009 @ Aug 3rd 2009 3:54PM
Poor Sony. They shot themselves in the foot by not pushing the EyeToy technology far enough. Now they're paying catch up to somebody using the same idea they had. Clearly, this guy and others like him with vision need more say in the direction the gaming division is going in.
Tridrakious @ Aug 3rd 2009 6:28PM
Well this is concrete proof that Sony was working on motion control before Nintendo. As if the Eyetoy for PS2 in 2003 wasn't already enough proof.
