74% of you have watched a Blu-ray movie
Did you hear? "It Only Does Everything." In addition to playing games, PS3 can perform a number of multimedia functions, many which will be highlighted in upcoming marketing materials. Central to PS3 is Blu-ray, Sony's proprietary HD movie format. Just as PlayStation 2 introduced the masses to DVDs, Sony planned to make PS3 the Trojan horse for this new disc format -- and it appears to be working.
SCEA's Eric Lempel spoke with Variety's Video Business, and he said that a significant majority of PS3 owners have tested its Blu-ray capability. "Right now, 74% of the users who have PS3s have spent time watching Blu-ray movies," he said. However, while PS3's key demographic of 20-something year old males may be allured by the 1080p boobs and explosions, Lempel says that PS3 can expand its audience through the PlayStation Network.
"Ever since we've introduced services like the video download service, we're getting more of the household on the PlayStation Network. Some of the top rentals and sales on the video side have been content that probably doesn't appeal exactly to that 28-year-old male. It's more those movies that are geared toward women," Lempel added. Perhaps that explains the success of the Zac Efron vehicle "17 Again" on the PlayStation Store versus the Blu-ray -- although who wouldn't want to see Efron's dreamy eyes in 1080p?

I'll admit, I didn't have any intention of buying a Blu-Ray player or an HDTV for a while. But when I bought my PS3, I decided to buy a TV to go with it, then the Blu-Ray's came. They really are better than DVD. Especially in the sound, and that's important to me.

I know exactly what you mean! I had no intention of getting either an HDTV OR Blu-ray Movies. My reasons being that seeing games and stuff in HD isn't reeealy nessecary... is it? And that Blu-ray Movies are more expensive and there can't be that much difference from the DVD version right?. Then i succumbed and got an HDTV, and WOW! the difference was suprisingly obvious. And because of the difference now I have ordered my first few Blu-ray Movies!

Playing Killzone 2 and watching Quantum of Solace was when it all came together...it was so beautiful. Even my 360 looked better.
Elmoogle @ Sep 1st 2009 8:32PM
I'm guessing the other 26% are those playing their PS3s on standard def TVs.
j.howlett @ Sep 1st 2009 8:42PM
i watched a few blurays on my standard def tv when i first got my ps3.
Mornelithe @ Sep 1st 2009 8:41PM
Absolutely agree Bradwart. The difference between Standard and Hi-Def (Video and Audio), are truly amazing. I'm never going back to SD if I can' thelp it.

I've watched a blu-ray, I have a sweet tv and it does look pretty good. But 99 per cent of the time my ps3 is playing games, the job I bought it to do.

Of course I have! I've got I am Legend and the Dark Knight on BRD..
Licker @ Sep 1st 2009 9:11PM
Speaking of movies off of the psn, I lost my download of Starship Troopers after replacing my 40 gig hard drive with a 320 gig one. Is there any way to get my copy back, or do they think I'm trying to get away with something. It has completely disappeared off my past downloads list in the movie tab on psn. I need some brain probing back in my life. Join the mobile infantry!
j.howlett @ Sep 1st 2009 9:16PM
the movies are different from the games, you'll likely have to buy it again. if you still have the old drive with the movie you might be able to back it p on a psp. it's a long shot.
Str84rumBk (PSN) @ Sep 1st 2009 11:48PM
ok heres what you do get the old hard drive and put it in your system. after that go and back up your hard drive to an SDcard MemoryStick or a flash drive. then go switch the harddrives again and go into the "storage" and copy the movie on to your new HDD
Hyperfludd @ Sep 1st 2009 9:31PM
My first Blu Ray Movie was Green Lantern First Flight
commen-cents @ Sep 1st 2009 9:52PM

Bri @ Sep 2nd 2009 12:49AM
just bought 2 more blu-ray's tonight. Gladiator and Braveheart. and this is with having them already in different formats.
...which also leaves me at more blu-rays than I had ps2 games.
and i'll never go back to SD either. I can't even watch SD TV anymore!
Windmill @ Sep 2nd 2009 7:38AM
I have a HDTV that outputs 1080p. I've watched a Blu Ray on it. I thought it was sharper but I was happy going back to watching DVD quality afterwards. I honestly don't notice much of an important difference?
Games are another story. It is a relief after upgrading to now have readable text.
Ian @ Sep 2nd 2009 9:40AM
Blu-ray or bust. I was a huge BR hater until I watched Coraline side by side. Major difference. If you look online, they don't cost any more than DVDs, so why not?
Danny @ Sep 2nd 2009 5:49PM
I haven't watched one yet, but with Star Trek coming out i'm certainly considering it. That movie was brilliant.
