Ben Heck moves Dualshock's shoulder buttons to the front
Can shoulder buttons still be called "shoulder buttons" when they no longer sit perched upon the Dualshock 3's shoulders? Could they be more aptly described as "hip buttons?" Regardless, the onus for renaming these toggles now rests upon modder extraordinaire Ben Heck, who made the controller's L1, L2, R1 and R2 buttons "easier to get at" by placing them on the front of the controller (at the cost of the peripheral's rumble motors).
We're perfectly contented with the shoulder buttons' current location, but we suppose folks who lost their index digits in a terrible Chinese Finger Trap incident may find this mod useful.

I have no idea how you could play shooters with this unless you have an extra finger before your thumbs...
Phil @ Sep 18th 2009 2:06PM
Normally I like the stuff Ben Heck comes up with, but I completely fail to see how this is easier. In fact, now they're further out of the way; to use an example from a game I've been playing recently, it's now an enormous pain with Heck's "improvement" to use any powers on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.
Kenoji (aka Neo Asuma) @ Sep 18th 2009 4:00PM
I agree. Ben Heck usually shows off some really cool stuff. But this looks...I don't know...it looks...tacky. Those buttons look like cut-out insulation or something.
Oh well, at least it shows that he can do it, because I sure can't.
Abdo @ Sep 18th 2009 2:08PM
That's just stupid.

"the onus for renaming these toggles now rests upon modder extraordinaire Ben Heck" More like Modder Retard-inaire.
Viney @ Sep 18th 2009 3:34PM
It is for us, but keep in mind that this was a custom request that Ben did for someone that needed easier access to the shoulder buttons.
linebeginstoblur @ Sep 18th 2009 2:09PM
I actually think it would be easier to not purely rely on thumbs and to actually be able to use your index and/or middle fingers additionally. But hey, to each his own, am I right?
Gavin @ Sep 18th 2009 4:06PM
that's how i held the original XBox 'fat boy' controller. It worked, in so far as i preferred the PS2's configuration...
Dv8thwonder @ Sep 18th 2009 2:10PM
I can see this being used primarily for FPS.
Viney @ Sep 18th 2009 2:14PM
Really?! I would figure FPS' would be the worst kind of game to play with this setup.
Dv8thwonder @ Sep 18th 2009 2:51PM
Best used for that twitch player. Faster shots by grippping the left side w/ your left hands palm. The right side can be gripped for quicker weapon selection.
Kevin @ Sep 18th 2009 2:10PM
that is the dumbest thing i have ever seen

only the L2 and R2 are the buttons to me that needs to be adjusted so they dont feel "cheap". i do prefer the trigger keys on the 360 but the layout for the DS is much more favourable to me
S. Tiger @ Sep 18th 2009 2:32PM
...DS?
RagingStormX @ Sep 18th 2009 3:00PM
@ S.Tiger - Just for you, imma go out on a limb and tell you that DS here stands for Dual Shock.
shadowhowl1900 @ Sep 18th 2009 4:36PM
well, yeah DS stands for dualshock
yamugushi @ Sep 18th 2009 2:15PM
...Wow...

Brett from Atlanta @ Sep 18th 2009 2:22PM
Why?
j.howlett @ Sep 18th 2009 2:29PM
i wonder if that's one of those counterfeit controllers
Todd @ Sep 18th 2009 2:46PM
This is so stupid. Haha. If I ever used this, I'm probably end up dying a lot, trying to figure out how to use the trigger buttons while also using the face buttons. This is just ridiculous.
Nobledevil @ Sep 18th 2009 3:02PM
This is easily the dumbest mod I've ever see..
So basically, instead of using my fully-functional index (and sometimes middle) fingers, I get to use my g**damn palm?
devilsei @ Sep 18th 2009 3:11PM
"We're perfectly contented with the shoulder buttons' current location, but we suppose folks who lost their index digits in a terrible Chinese Finger Trap incident may find this mod useful."
The chances of someone losing their finger to some bizarre finger trap incident is more likely than anyone wanting to use this controller.
The chances of said trap turning into a dragon and biting your fingers off with its mouth and... well you can figure the other area yourselves, is greater than anyone wanting this controller.
schabalabadingding @ Sep 18th 2009 3:13PM
how can I get this controller?? I am a disabled gamer and this would actually work for me. this is a serious post guys, does anyone know how I can get this? or possibly contact this guy?

Viney @ Sep 18th 2009 3:32PM
This controller was actually a custom request that he did for someone, so I'm sure he'd hear you out if you're serious.
kentuckyfried @ Sep 18th 2009 3:20PM
So I guess for COD, he just flexes his palms a little and the grenades magically launch on cue?
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Sep 18th 2009 3:31PM
Remember these mods are ment for disabled gamers.Heck's 1 handed controller. http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/06/06/ben-hecks-access-con.html Heck's 1 handed guitar hero controller.eduhttp://www.ablegamers.com/hardware-news/251-ben-heck-makes-one-handed-guitar-hero.html

McWilly (Revealing bullshit since 1988) @ Sep 18th 2009 4:53PM
How do you move/aim while shooting? Sense, it doesn't make.
ryanpaulmcgowan @ Sep 18th 2009 5:12PM
So, I take it 90% of Joystick readers only play FPS games.
hfm @ Sep 18th 2009 6:43PM
"but we suppose folks who lost their index digits in a terrible Chinese Finger Trap incident may find this mod useful."
Haha funny shit..
cameltrader @ Sep 18th 2009 7:25PM
lol, yeah a shooter might be abit difficult!
ryan_gliebe @ Sep 18th 2009 8:22PM
That mod looks incredibly stupid, pointless, etc. As another said, I could see where the buttons helpful placed there if we ever grow another finger next to our thumbs, though.
JACK @ Sep 18th 2009 9:45PM
Oh so all you have to do is somehow grow an extra finger below your thumb.
