Video: Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 interview (plus: screenshot comparisons)
Given an extra year of development, it's no wonder why the Sigma version of Ninja Gaiden 2 is so far improved over the original. The upcoming PS3 exclusive adds a ton of new features, ranging from awesome to downright ridiculous. GamesWire took screenshots of the original Xbox 360 Ninja Gaiden 2 and compared them with the new Sigma edition, noting, "The lighting and textures are just so much better this time around and there's much more detail to be seen now too."
Additionally, the PlayStation.blog took some time (10 minutes, actually) to show off the various features of Sigma. You'll get to see the Ultimate Ninpo in action, as well as an extended look at the new co-op mode -- and yes, you'll even see the franchise's notorious Game Over screen. Check that out after the break.
[Thanks, Jeremy B.!]

Wow..., there is a huge difference between the two versions. Can't wait to pick up NGS2 in 2 weeks.

Looking sweet for ps3 owners

No guy it's not a design change, depth of field is actually a special effect that costs the system to use. I've always had an issue with Xbox360 blurring EVERYTHING. Depth of field is like bloom or any other special effect. Some systems can't handle them as well. So sometimes they just leave it out altogether. Despite even removing these extra effects they even go so far as to lower the texture resolution, which is why even the foreground is blurry. Hell I picked up Mass Effect for PC and OMG I just can't believe what they did to that game.
The problem with the Xbox360 and one you can never get around is the DVD, it might be able to handle higher textures, but it can't be placed on a single DVD. However this still doesn't explain why it can't handle special effects like DoF.
This is the problem with crossplatform they will always have to be equal, except for these situations where they decide screw the pooch (MS) and show them how it was meant to be.
HMote @ Sep 18th 2009 1:30PM
Look at the background textures though...You can't even tell that there is a tree in the background of the above pic and the tower is a night and day difference.
DigitalTwisted @ Sep 18th 2009 2:17PM
That's called Depth of Field. Background textures shouldn't be just as clear as foreground textures as you aren't focusing on them in this screenshot. Yet on the 360 version they are every bit as clear as the somewhat blurry foreground textures
That's just not realistic.
HMote @ Sep 18th 2009 2:46PM
So really it's not a comparison of 360 vs PS3 as much as it is a comparison of design choices from the developer from focusing more on the foreground and less on the background.

PlayStation 3 games look better than 360 games.
SHOCKING!
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 18th 2009 3:31PM
Hmm... If I do recall there are plenty of 360 games that look better than 360. Ghostbusters as an example.
Traceur_Ryuk (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Sep 18th 2009 3:32PM
Err... I mean that look better than PS3, not 360.
Gimboa @ Sep 18th 2009 3:38PM
Yes, Ghostbusters is a GREAT example. The games that look better on the 360 are games that generally look kinda dated. Ghostbusters doesn't even look good for a 360 game. It's clearly behind what the PS3 is capable of.
I think this is a bit of a silly argument, but the games that look better on the 360 generally just aren't that good looking anyway. If graphical goodness is your god, which it really shouldn't be, then PC gaming is probably at the front if you're wealthy, and the PS3 is definitely at the front of the consoles. None of the console games look as good as PS3 exclusives, especially those that are multis that favor the 360.
Is Microsoft playing hardball? Are devs just not putting as much effort into multi quality? It is just too expensive to take full advantage of the PS3 when you can get it to approximate the 360 more easily? Who cares. We're only talking about graphical quality of games like ghostbusters, which are games that do not emphasize graphical quality.
It's like comparing the reliability of various GM products from the 80s. Not their strong point anyway.

Dood. Is that giant thing kinking ass supposed to be the Statue of Liberty? I guess I understand the whole 'invisible ninja cutting the Statue of Liberty in half' commercial now...

Damn it man, I Fúcking LOVE Spirited Away!

The demo is on the Japan Store and its in English!
korwyn @ Sep 18th 2009 2:11PM
You don't even have to look better than the 360 version, Ninja Gaiden Zigma 2. You had me at the SIXAXIS up and down. Now if I could move the controller in circle with the onscreen effect too, or even teasing her with the left or right analog as well. I might consider getting 3 copies of the game. :o) One to play, one to collect, one for a spare.
Danie @ Sep 18th 2009 2:13PM
"Given an extra year of development". So what you saying is that NG 2 development was already completed a year ago, meaning that team ninja decide to take one more year just to improve the NG2 ps3 version. I wonder if that statement came from Team ninja or just another laughable comment from a writer wnabee
Viney @ Sep 18th 2009 2:36PM
It means they had a full year between last year and now to squeeze in the extras and optimize the PS3 version. It doesn't mean they were developing for a whole extra year. Don't be such a douche about it.
RagingStormX @ Sep 18th 2009 2:18PM
Loving those trophies...this platinum will be my most favorite =). I can't get enough of the demo.
VOS @ Sep 18th 2009 2:27PM
Well shit, given a year later I would hope it would look better.
truth @ Sep 18th 2009 2:35PM
@Dave but can it play PS2 games?
Viney @ Sep 18th 2009 2:45PM
Does it need to? Last time I tried, PS2s were pretty good at that.
RagingStormX @ Sep 18th 2009 2:46PM
Mines surely does....so if thats all you needed to know, yes!...it even plays PS2 games :)
Luminite @ Sep 18th 2009 3:23PM
Yup! My PS3 plays PS2 games! I love the fact that I can play Persona 3 & 4 along with the slew of other great PS2 titles. I also can't wait for the great upcoming titles such as Demon's Souls, and 3D Dot Game Heroes. Demon's Souls just looks amazing, and from what I hear is amazing. 3D Dot Game Heroes has a very interesting take on 8bit style graphics, and Zelda esque gameplay which is never bad.
I have to say I'm glad I own a PS3! The PS3 is probably the only system out right with games that actually dare to dwell in true gaming territory. Next up is the Wii, minus all the money making gimmicks.
Microsoft and Xbox 360, IMO, seems to destroy what I love about games the most, which is variety and creativity.
They are just out there to get our dinero!
Dave @ Sep 18th 2009 3:30PM
Why yes, yes it does.
Call me back when the 360 has full BC.
jason @ Sep 18th 2009 4:04PM
My PS3 dose play PS2 games i got it back in 2007 dose PS3 can do everything i bet mine can lol
Tony @ Sep 18th 2009 2:49PM
Honestly, it mostly just looks brighter, but it still looks good. I enjoyed the game.
I can't imagine it's going to set anything on fire though... If I only had a PS3 I'd be excited, but if I didn't the game's like $10 new on 360 nowadays.

I like how more cinematic the PS3 version looks.
What is truly impressive about this tho is that her entire weight is being supported by one breast!

I never played the first, but this looks like a button-masher.
This game any good?
RagingStormX @ Sep 18th 2009 5:52PM
You could be more wrong my fellow man.....you will fail horribily if you try to button mash your way through any of the Ninja Gaiden Sigma games. The AI in NGS (and NGS2 from the demo) will not stand and wait their turn, defenslessly as you button mash. The are just as prepared to deal an ass whuppin' as you may be and its up to you to be more of a rape-dat-ass first ninja if you plan on making it out alive. Chances are there might be some parts on easy that may seem like a cake walk, but I wouldn't know. I say download the demo off of the jap PSN store or wait until next week for the US\EU release. Then make the call...but to me this game is all kinds of awesome....plus it has frickin ninjas man.......ninjas! Only one thing can top that, and this game has it.....female ninjas with tig ol' bitties. Dammit...I am going to play the demo again right now.

Haohmaru (PSN - DimmuBurgerKing XBL - A Real Puppet ) @ Sep 18th 2009 6:06PM
Check out the first one before you decide. The previous reply hit the nail on the head; do not expect to be able to button-mash your way through the game. You have to think and figure out the best combo to use in the appropriate situation; otherwise, you're going to die A LOT. Once you get accustomed to that aspect, though, it's one of the most rewarding action games I've ever played.

Too bad the slim can't which is the one that is marketed to do "everything" btw I have a PS3 nice assumption that I have an xbox.

NOT ME @ Oct 3rd 2009 1:07AM
wow i finished in 1 day....this is ninja gaiden for dummies...I didnt really mind the blood loss but....1 weapon upgrade per level cmon. that was stupid. and how life of a thousand gods and the orbs are added automatically as soon as you pick them up. I used to hold on to those till a boss fight because they would make you bar longer and it would refill it...and WTF happened to the challenge levels...why did they completely remove that...WTF!!! and why take out the big devil elixir that one that refill all your ki not just one, and the health one also at the end of the game i had over 150k of essense left cause there isnt anything to buy anymore. and why move the dragon fang to level 6. There was no reason for all the shit they left out. and how come the extra characters dont get different weapons are weapons upgrade. Its stupid because in coop ryu has all these weapons and the others only have the default.....like i said this shit is way to easy. You can easily tell by the level when you climb the steps there's only half as many enemies coming at you, that used to be my favorite part....its obvious that the better parts of team ninja wasnt around for this....oh and how the F**k did the camera get worse. the right joystick movement is very limited now. I dont understand why they cant just do a 3/4 view when enemies are surrounding you...so you can see all the angles. and that path finder shit WTF is THAT....is this new standard now just show us the way...no maps. no wonder people are so slow these days....they've completely neutered this game....
