Blu-ray releases for the week of January 25th

A sale is going on right now on selected Blu-ray titles, many of them are under $15 and all of them are under $20. Check it out here. As for this week's releases:

Theatrical releases:
Bundles:
Three thoroughly entertaining action flicks starring Matt Damon as the super-spy Jason Bourne in one reasonably-priced package? Sure, I'd buy that for a dollar. We are really glad to see Dead & Buried -- it's a nice reminder that even the most obscure cult zombie movies have a chance to make it to Blu-ray. Theatrical releases are above, while everything else is after the jump:

Special edition FFVII PS3 revealed, FFXIII demo dated

So there are more PS3 units with special markings coming out. The release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete on April 16 will usher in this new 160GB bundle in Japan. The new unit will be bundled with the reworked and extended film from Square Enix, which will also include a demo for Final Fantasy XIII.

Alongside the hardware bundle, Advent Children Complete will see release in two other packages: the movie with the FFXIII demo, and the movie without it. The film will include English voiceovers, so those looking to import won't miss a beat. There's still no word of a release date outside Japan and whether the bonus demo would appear in worldwide releases of the film.

Here's a breakdown of the three packages and their prices:
  • ¥49,980 [$550] - 160GB PS3 with Cloud wolf logo and copy of ACC
  • ¥5,900 [$65] - Advent Children Complete with demo
  • ¥4,900 [$54] - Advent Children Complete without demo

Blu-ray releases for the week of January 18th

Video games and movies usually don't mix -- and Max Payne is no exception. Here are this week's Blu-ray releases:

Theatrical releases:
Denzel Washington flexes both his acting and directing chops in the true story of Antwone Fisher, an American sailor who was physically and sexually abused as a child. This blogger really enjoyed 13 Going on 30 -- it was sweet, entertaining and touching -- is that something to be ashamed of? And last but not least, who can forget the critically acclaimed fourth installment in the esteemed film franchise Poison Ivy? Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:

Theatrical releases:

We had an excellent time with Appaloosa, an old-school Western helmed by Ed Harris that features stellar acting and solid writing. Mirrors starts out okay, but by the second half one couldn't wait for this dull excuse of a horror movie to end. Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:

Blu-ray releases for the week of January 4th

Already hailed by Empire magazine as one of the best TV shows of all time, Dexter's charming self arrives on Blu-ray this week:

Theatrical releases:
The Criterion Collection continues its peculiar (though certainly not unwelcome) practice of releasing their Blu-ray releases at prices lower than their DVD counterparts with The Last Emperor. Pineapple Express is a charming fast-paced comedy that even non-stoners can enjoy. Finally, a movie that truly lives up to its name: Disaster Movie. Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:

Blu-ray releases for the week of December 28th

Nothing too exciting in terms of Blu-ray releases this week, but Firefly fans will be extremely glad to see Serenity make its debut in the HD format of our choice:
Oh, you mean you didn't get enough of Matthew McConaughey's hair plugs and shirtless torso in the tabloids and Fool's Gold? Then we highly recommend Surfer, Dude. If you liked Dead Space, you should check out Event Horizon -- both are of the sci-fi/horror genre with religious overtones. The rest of the theatrical releases are above.

Hybrid DVD/Blu-ray disc released in Japan

Don't you wish your favorite Blu-ray movie could work at grandma's place? But drats, for some reason she just doesn't have a Blu-ray player. Thankfully, you own a hybrid DVD/Blu-ray disc, so you'll be able to watch your Blu-ray movie on a standard DVD player. It won't be in HD, but SD movie better than no movie, right?

This tech isn't far off. In fact, it's available now. Infinity Storage Media has released the first hybrid disc, which allows just that. By using a clever dual-layer process, DVD drives will be able to read a DVD layer, while Blu-ray drives will be able to read a Blu-ray layer. The image above shows the process in a rather simple way.

We're not sure how far this technology will reach, or if it will be adopted by other companies. For now, this is a strictly Japan-only product. We can see tons of studios capitalizing on the HD transition by releasing their movies on a hybrid disc like this.

Blu-ray releases for the week of December 21st

Let's start things off with a nice deal on the critically acclaimed Band of Brothers, yours for only $37.49. This week's Blu-ray release dates seem to be all over the place: a couple were released today, some will be released on Tuesday and the remainder will be released on Saturday:

Theatrical releases:
Double features:
Although Resident Evil: Degeneration takes place within the same universe as the games, this CG movie received the same mixed reviews as the flicks of the live-action trilogy. The Women unites a number of well-known female thespians in a commendable remake of the 1939 classic starring Joan Crawford. Eagle Eye requires a willing suspension of disbelief if you intent to enjoy it, but with the running time at 2 minutes shy of 2 hours, the whole charade simply goes on for too long. Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:

Blu-ray releases for the week of December 14th

Nothing in the foreseeable future will beat last week's big release in terms of sales, but we've got a feeling film buffs are still very much looking forward to this week's Blu-rays:

Theatrical releases:

The first wave of Criterion Collection Blu-rays promised to us back in November finally make their debut this week -- curiously, Chungking Express and Bottle Rocket on Blu-ray are both significantly cheaper than their DVD counterparts. Does Uwe Boll finance his own movies? Because we can't fathom who would be willing to invest any money into a project that has his name attached to it. Tommy Boy is one of the best comedies of the 90s, especially for fans of the late Chris Farley. And if you haven't seen Into The Wild, what are you waiting for?

The Dark Knight fastest selling Blu-ray of all time; over 25% format share

We had high hopes for The Dark Knight's Blu-ray release. But boy, we didn't expect such phenomenal results. The Dark Knight has become the fastest selling Blu-ray yet, besting the last king of the hill, Iron Man. Nearly 3 million copies of the movie were sold on Tuesday, with 600,000 units being sold on Blu-ray. That means about 25-30% of the disc sales were on Blu-ray -- an impressive feat for a relatively new format.

"It's encouraging," said Ron Sanders, president of Warner Home Video. "The Blu-ray sales of 'Dark Knight' were exceptionally strong and much higher than our projections." Considering The Dark Knight is an obvious addition to an HD home theater set up, we doubt their projections were much lower. Besides, all that money should make up for the Golden Globe snub, amirite?

Deal: Buy PS3 80GB get Dark Knight and Resistance 2 CE free [Update]

[Update: All gone already!]

Amazon is offering a free copy of The Dark Knight on Blu-ray and Resistance 2 Collector's Edition with the purchase of a PlayStation 3 80GB for $399.99 with free shipping. Just click here, add all three items to your cart, then enter the coupon code PSKNIGHT during checkout.

The weird thing is, some parts of the site are claiming the deal is valid for today (December 9th) only while the official rules are stating the offer is "valid 12 AM Pacific time, December 9, 2008, through 11:59 PM. Pacific time, December 10, 2008." Our suggestion? If you are interested, take advantage of this today and not wait until tomorrow to find out if the offer is still valid. The deal is right through here.

Chat with Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight's BD-Live chat

You may have missed the Hellboy II BD-Live chat, but we're pretty sure you're not going to want to miss this one. Christopher Nolan, director of the summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight, will be part of a Blu-ray exclusive "live community screening." The registration process for this event is a bit cumbersome, and it's also limited -- so read the instructions carefully! The two disc BD set will be available on December 9th.
