SouthPeak sees revenue surge on 'post-holiday demand'

Hey, SouthPeak, we're in a recession, didn't you hear? The publisher again pocketed an impressive wad of cash, reporting $13.5 million in revenue during its fiscal third quarter, up more than $2 million over the same time the previous year. According to Gamasutra, the company cited "post-holiday consumer demand" and recent releases like Big Bang Mini and X-Blades as key factors in the outfit's financial buoyancy.

With 711,000 units of software flying out the door during the quarter, it's no wonder the company is making plans for the future. The report notes that SouthPeak has more than 60 games in the works, with over $14 million currently invested in development of new titles and IP. Perhaps we can finally quit pointing and laughing as the publisher of Gamecock cast-offs Legendary and Velvet Assassin rolls up to the bank. Clearly some gamers' spirits are more resilient than others.

One legendary Legendary demo now on the XBLM

Today, Spark Unlimited figured they'd gift us with a surprising, out of nowhere gift that has left us in the awkward position of not having anything to give back.

The gift, a 748MB Legendary demo that can be downloaded via the Xbox Live Marketplace. And seeing that this demo was sprung on us so suddenly, the only holiday gift we can give in return would be our actual downloading of the demo. So, that'll have to do. You've been gifted a Legendary demo, now gift back by actually playing it. It's only right.

Shipping this week: Boring edition

Is there a more boring month than November? It's like there's nothing worth playing this month at all. After the debacle that was last week, this week is completely bereft of anything even remotely resembling fun in even the most infinitesimal way. Seriously, have you seen what's coming out this week? Just take a look.
See? Nothing. Ah well, maybe we'll finally get something worth playing next week.

360 Deals: It's a free $10 gift card bonanza

This week, there is a lot of Xbox 360 new game release deals. So much so, that we'll forgo an overly long intro and just get right to it. So ...

Best Buy is giving out a free beanie hat with purchase of Guitar Hero World Tour, selling Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway for $40 and offering Blitz II for $50. Target stores only have one good deal and that's a free $25 gift card with purchase of an Xbox 360 Arcade console. Circuit City is dishing out the gift cards (as has become the norm), giving away a free $10 gift card with purchase of Fable II, Golden Axe, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Saints Row 2, and Hell's Highway. You can score a free $10 gift card and mini strategy guide with purchase of Fallout 3 (CE), a free $15 iTunes gift card with purchase of Guitar Hero World Tour and a free t-shirt with Legendary. Phew ... happy shopping!

Shipping this week: indecision edition

Oh boy. Not only are there eight new games hitting the Xbox 360 this weeks (and Portal on XBLA, lest we forget), but several of them look to be good games. Heavy hitters like Far Cry 2 and Fable II undoubtedly top the list, but there are some other big names in there as well. Check 'em out:
Now, the question is are there any "must have" games on this list for you, or are you strategically withholding your funds for something else?

Legendary achievements and Legendary screens

Today, Spark Unlimited released a new set of screenshots for Legendary The Box as well as a complete list of game achievements. You can take a gander through the new and improved Legendary screens including a gelatinous looking werewolf, a dude's face and some on screen text that looks eerily similar to X3F's witty image commentary text. Just saying.

Legendary officially out by end of September

Don't be fooled, "end of September" is not being vague ... It just sounds much nicer than saying "September 30" -- which just so happens to be the exact release date. You can expect to see the Pandora's Box FPS, Legendary, out on store shelves by then. In the meantime, you can spend the time waiting for that day by reading our hands-on, and by having a little preview of the 96-page Legendary graphic novel. See a pic of that after the break.

A few Legendary griffon and werewolf screens

Gamecock and Spark Unlimited just sent a set of new screenshots from their upcoming Pandora's box shooter Legendary, and there's plenty to love if you're obsessed with griffons or werewolves. There's werewolves attacking helicopters, werewolves jumping out of windows and even werewolves attacking a griffon. Attacking a griffon! Ahem, view Legendary screenshot love below. That is all.

PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Legendary

Click for high resolution image

Legendary is a modern day first person shooter with a slight twist. The twist being that you're not just firing at the usual soldier clad in army gear, but you'll also be spitting bullets at mythical creatures of yore. That's right, go toe-to-toe with griffins, werewolves, and minotaurs (oh my!). Now how did those beasts arrive in the modern world? That's the fault of our protagonist, Deckard, who reluctantly opened up Pandora's Box and, well, doomed us all.

Luckily for us, we were prepared for the apocalypse and braved the first several hours of Legendary. The game kicks off in New York City with Deckard trying to steal "the box" from a museum, but he ends up activating it. The box imbues a seal onto his hand, granting him magical powers which are not only for story purposes but is also a very useful weapon and healing tool. Gameplay-wise, Deckard's magic ability adds a layer of strategy on top of the standard shooter experience. When you take down any of the creatures of legend, they'll leave traces of energy which Deckard can absorb and use to replenish his magic power or his health. To replenish one's health, you'll need to hold down the triangle button which actively drains from his magic pool. What's good about this is that you can control how much health you want to restore and not waste a drop. It's a small thing, but noteworthy in the long run and in the more difficult settings. You can carry four weapons on you at any one time. Two of the four are reserved for molotovs and grenades while the other two allow you to switch around with various firearms. Select your currently equipped weapon with the d-pad.

One of the things that sticks out about Legendary the most is the design and strategy you'll need to utilize in defeating different types of enemies. For example, some of the first creatures you'll meet are the firedrakes. You can take these things down with bullets but they will continuously respawn. To take them out completely you'll need to douse them with water; to do this you'll need to use environmental objects, like say, finding a valve and turning on the sprinklers or shooting a fire hydrant wide open.

Pre-order Legendary, get art book and DVD

Legendary is set for release next month in September and if you're planning on picking it up, perhaps you'd like to avail of the free pre-order bonus. For putting down a few greenbacks early on Legendary, you'll get a nice little folder with a 30+ page art book and a DVD with five videos. You can get the items at participating retailers. With that said, we haven't seen any retailers listing the pre-order items yet, but we'd assume major chains and gaming stores like GameStop would be carrying them soon.

If you haven't yet heard of Legendary, it's a modern day FPS about a man who opens up Pandora's Box. He unknowingly unleashes mythical beasts upon the world such as Golems, Griffins, Werewolves, and Minotaurs. We've also got a clip after the break with the developers discussing what the game is all about, so be sure to watch that.

Gears of War movie gets more financing

Variety reports that Legendary Pictures has signed on to co-finance and co-produce the upcoming Gears of War film adaptation. This comes in the wake of Legendary financing another film based on a little game called World of Warcraft. Legendary also recently had its hand in The Dark Knight, which is currently tearing up the box office. Epic guru Mark Rein said of the deal, "Legendary's appetite for the synthesis of gaming, film and pop culture meshes perfectly with our own." Well, that's good. We all like it when appetites for synthesis mesh.

Joystiq hands-on: Legendary

New York City's being overrun by mythical creatures, there's a building-sized Golem wandering the streets, and ... the Ghostbusters are nowhere to be found. Spark Unlimited, the team behind Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, is in the final stretch with its latest FPS outing, once known as Legendary: The Box (a title that earned it a very special Joystiq award last E3) and now simply Legendary.

Firing it up and starting a new game, we were only moments into it when the non-titular box (belonging to Pandora and filled with nastiness) was opened and the world went to hell. Our preconceptions of a "humans versus monsters" FPS also went out a nearby window once we started noticing that the enemies weren't always gunning exclusively for us.

These new Legendary screens are lycanthropic

Click for high resolution image.

A new batch of screenshots for the upcoming Pandora's-Box-em-up, Legendary, show off a few of the supernatural enemies you'll be encountering in the game. We're still so very pleased that they dropped the ridiculous "The Box" subtitle. We can't help but feel that Legendary will be just another FPS that doesn't manage to raise itself above the rest of the genre's noise. Having said that, these screenshots look quite pretty and are very atmospheric. We'll reserve judgment until we've seen a little more of the game. Check out the full gallery below or click the image above.
