Revenge of the Wounded Dragons finally kung fu kicking it on PSN tomorrow, Dec. 10
It's been two weeks since Revenge of the Wounded Dragons, SOE / Wanako's modern tribute to games such as Double Dragon and Kung Fu, was supposed to arrive on the PlayStation Store. The game's imminent release was even announced on PlayStation.Blog for the early pre-Thanksgiving PSN update that arrived on Tuesday, November 24. For reasons unknown, the game was bumped and will instead punch up the retro vibe on PS3 tomorrow, December 10.
The two-player game will run $9.99 and you can watch a nice, quick video of it in action in our earlier post. Really, we promise it doesn't drag on.

Revenge of the Wounded Dragons side-scrolling onto PSN tomorrow, Nov. 24

Wounded Dragons appears to feature a more involved combo system than its forebears, though, along with modern niceties like Trophies, custom soundtracks and leaderboards. Like NES fighters, however, the game is limited to local play -- yes, despite, ironically, being published by SOE. Revenge of the Wounded Dragons will be released on the PlayStation Store tomorrow, November 24, for $9.99. Hit the break to watch the trailer.
ESRB rates SOE-published 2D brawler 'Revenge of the Wounded Dragons' [update]

If it weren't strange enough that Sony Online Entertainment is listed as the publisher for recently ESRB rated PlayStation 3 side-scrolling brawler Revenge of the Wounded Dragons, we find it all the stranger that a trademark filing from last September puts Wet developer A2M in the developer's seat. The game's description, aside from pinning it as a PS3 exclusive, tells us that it's a "2D fighting game" where players will "frequently punch, kick, and throw enemies as they 'side-scroll' forward through the platform city environments."
We put our top men on deciphering this rating-wary, encrypted message, and they have surmised that the title will likely be some form of a Double Dragon clone. Reading further into the description, we see that the game follows "two brothers attempting to avenge their grandfather's death and rescue their sister from the local mafia boss." A 2D, sidescrolling brawler that follows the tale of two brothers out for revenge? You don't say! We contacted both A2M and Sony Online Entertainment for comment, but have yet to hear back.

Magic: The Gathering Tactics to have PC/PS3 connectivity
Relations between Sony Online Entertainment's John Smedley and the guys from Penny Arcade have clearly improved since the Donut Debacle of 2006. Smedley recently took a moment to talk to Jerry "Tycho" Holkins about Magic: The Gathering Tactics, revealing a few savory tidbits about the title -- the most delightful of which being the fact that the PS3 and PC versions of the game will be interconnected, allowing a player to use his account (and all his meticulously crafted decks) on both platforms.
Basically, if you've got a laptop, a PS3 and an unslakable hunger for thin, rectangular artifacts imbued with immeasurable power, then your social life and work ethic are about to be assaulted on all sides. Good luck with that!

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics tapped for PC and PS3 release
Of course, it's not Magic without frequent, additional purchases, and SOE promises "regular content expansions," which will no doubt become a de facto requirement for highly competitive tournament play. The game is being developed by SOE's Denver studio, and will be out on PC in early 2010, with the PS3 release to follow.
SOE's John Smedley calls PlanetSide sequel 'PlanetSide Next'
Sony Online Entertainment could go all the way crazy and officially announce that it's working on the sequel to the popular MMOFPS PlanetSide, but why bother? No, SOE would much rather release a survey mentioning the sequel, only to be called "PlanetSide Next" by company prez John Smedley a few weeks later on his LiveJournal (has it really come to this, folks?).
Though few details are given, Smedley takes the time to thoroughly declare his love for the series, and in doing so speaks of SOE's intentions with PlanetSide Next. "To me, PlanetSide Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in PlanetSide and make it a lot better ... massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch ... none of this 64-player stuff ... REALLY MASSIVE." We're just hoping our measly laptops will be able to handle the game's sheer massiveness.
[Thanks, Hamma!]

Rumor: Sony survey hints at PlanetSide 2 development

The language in the survey (posted after the jump) doesn't make it sound like SOE is working on a half-baked expansion or a genre-defying spinoff, as it tells participants, "the information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter." The only thing we remember from our time with PlanetSide was getting killed a whole whole lot. We're not sure what Sony can do about that, besides entirely removing death from the sequel.

Smedley calls The Agency cancellation rumors 'ridiculous'

"Next year" was as closely as Smedley could approximate the release date. "Can't get -- because I've been wrong like three times with that game. And we're not going to release it until it's right. But there's this rumor going around that we're going to cancel it -- that's ridiculous."
It's worth noting that a cancellation rumor was debunked by SOE in November, but it's been ten months since then! Seems like a good time to assert once again that the game is still in development.
"No," Smedley continued, "we're going full-bore towards it. We're simply keeping it under wraps more because we want to make it the best possible game we can. I'm an FPS player first and foremost, so we're going to get that game right, period." Smedley firmly denied that the departure of staff would affect the game's development.

Free Realms coming to PS3 mid-2010, may support PlayStation Eye

During his speech, Smedley also addressed the functions which would be specifically tailored for the MMO's console outing, saying, "For the PlayStation 3 version, it's very likely that the Eye is going to be something we support." We hope the Eye's implementation isn't of a voyeuristic nature -- if there's anything our late-night Uno sessions taught us, it's Camera + Internet Strangers = Terror.
SOE prez delivering GDC Austin keynote

Considering Free Realms was initially announced at the Lone Star State's annual gaming convention in 2007, we can expect a majority of Smedley's speech to focus on the free-to-play online title -- particularly on how it hastily acquired five million players. Actually, by the time said event opens its doors, we wouldn't be surprised if that number was in the low-to-mid billions.
The Matrix Online's final moments documented
Friday was the last day for SOE's The Matrix Online. We've been following the collapse of this older MMO for a few months now and, thankfully, our brothers and sisters in the resistance over at Massively were there to experience and document the end. There was some merrymaking, lightning and even a bit of ... eyes dripping blood? Check out Massively's gallery below for all of the endgame ceremonies.

Reminder: The Matrix Online shuts down this week
We've been locked in this hellish war against the machines for years now, but word has just come in from Morpheus that Neo is close to striking up a deal with those metallic monstrosities. Neo has been trying to negotiate a treaty for some time now and, if what we're hearing is true, the machines will finally shut down the Matrix on July 31 and let our brothers and sisters go. Now, we didn't get everything we wanted (mostly our robotic slaves returned), but, in the end, it'll be for everyone's benefit. We can finally get back to those ridiculous dance parties we all love so much!

SOE: Free Realms 'close to' 5 million users
We've been following the saga of SOE's free-to-play MMO, Free Realms, for some time now. First, it reached one million a mere 18 days after release, only to add another million in May. And, as if that wasn't enough, another million folks signed up a month later. It appears the game has no ceiling, though, as SOE president John Smedley told Comic-Con attendees (via Gamasutra) that the game is close to five million users now.
Smedley attributed the success to the free-to-play model (uh, you think?) and said that folks have been surprisingly receptive to microtransactions. Because of this crazy rise in popularity, The Joystiq Hall of Science™ has stepped in to offer its own projection. According to our figures, we're estimating the game will have 17 billion users by Columbus Day of this year.

Layoffs hit Sony Online Entertainment

SOE did not specify the departments or games from which the affected jobs were lost, and it told Massively that it will not discuss the layoffs further. We don't think we'd want to either!
SOE announces EverQuest: Underfoot and Everquest II: Sentinel's Fate expansions
Our sister site BigDownload has the scoop on a pair of new expansions for SOE's popular Everquest franchise that were announced at this week's Fan Faire in Las Vegas. First up is the 16th commercial expansion for 1999's Everquest, Everquest: Underfoot. Due for release this November, the expansion brings with it a new underground zone to explore, with new creatures to battle, and even less reason to leave your house.
Probably more relevant is Everquest II: Sentinel's Fate, the sixth commercial expansion for Everquest II. Due for release in February 2010, Sentinel's Fate will raise the level cap to 90, allowing you to spend ten more levels beefing up that Summoner of yours.
